Actually, the original proteus' were recalled because the clear versions had a tendancy to shatter at and/or near the ear pieces when struck with a paintball a few times. I think thats why they changed it by replacing the chin with flexible material and they reinforced th emask somehow or what not. Hope I helped a bit. Peace.

just to reiterate , and add a bit

The very first proteus goggles had the strap mounted on the back of the ear piece ( like the current ones ). These strap mountings were breaking and dropping masks. Available only in black. I think!!

They revised this by attaching the strap through the ear piece attchments and carry on to the lens frames ( like normal spectra 260 / flex 7 etc ). That way , it could n't fall off. Again just in black at first.

The newer ones came with the shorter strap ( again attached at the back of the ear piece ) new colours and the flexi rubber chin bits.

They do seem to have more of a tendancey to fog up though!! Even with the fan ( one of the guys has the fan , and still fogs ). Not just me that has found this. The whole team noticed it.

The ear piece rotated on all of the models.;) .

The ear piece section wraps slightly more around your head. I have the old version and my ear section spins. My mate has the new version and between us thats the only difference we have noticed.

Yeh, we found that they tend to fog up every now and then. Something to do with the way they sit on your head - or maybe I've got a head shaped like a mutated melon???

Anyway, our whole team is going back to Flex7s - prefer em and more bounces (which is always good).

I went back to the Flex 7 for a differant reason, every time I caught a hit on the lower half of the lenz I ended up with a split lip from shell coming through the venting. Happened twice before I retired 'em. Thats also probably why they fog up easier.
