Stop me if I'm wrong, but in my humble opinion, PGI doesn't seem to portray the sport to an outsider quite the way Facefull does. I'm talking looks here....

Don't get me wrong, PGI is far, far, FAR superior when it comes to actual content (I just get facefull for the piccies), but Paintball is predominantly (<--- dunno how it's spelt!!??!) a visual sport. ie, it looks good, therefore it is. Normal static photos don't tend to do it ANY justice whatsoever, but I feel Facefull's pictures, which admittedly are sometimes too perfect to be anything but staged, seem to capture the whole point of the sport. This being that it is a dynamic, intense and technically flamboyant, in-your-face, kick-arse Uber-sport!!!

When I get into a conversation with friends about paintball and I want to show them (and other outsiders, for that matter...), just what the modern form of our sport actually is, I struggle to impress them with PGI. Sure, there are usually on e or two dope piccies, but the mag is generally geared towards the established "Scenester", rather than out to impress EVERYONE.

I don't mind though. I just whip out my latest copy of Facefull and I show them the piccies, and this will usually generate a resounding confirmation that we aint no jungle dwelling Rambo wannabe's. Then I go back to reading the important stuff in PGI....

Ok, so I'll still buy both magazines, but couldn't you PGI dudes employ some mega sport photographers too? please?

....and where's that bloody gallery????!!!!

Mmmmmm

Gotta be said, the photography in Facefull is just plain mind blowin but that's what you get from top notch pro photographers with some serious cash moneys worth of photography kit. A lot of PGI's tourney shots are taken by other people, not pro photographers, hence the price difference between the two mags. Facefull is trying to show the sport off whilst PGI is more a purists magazine and I think it's important to have both kinds in the sport. PGI tends to invite you to the party and you kinda feel you know the freaks that are involved, especially now coz of the forum but Facefull is a lot less accessible, more of a fashion magazine which kinda glamorises us tourney players, the pros in particular.

Not sure if I like the clothing shoots but I suppose it gets the top dudes involved a bit more, makes the fools feel special.:D

I'm pissed off at Facefull, actually, and here's why...

Ant, Bigg and Robbo will be preturbed to read one of their writers taking public umbrage like this, but I feel justified.

I don't know what issue I was looking at. A friend showed it to me at Skyball. And I looked it over, nice pics, naked chicks, all that, then I got to a two page cartoon in the back. And they retold in cartoon form something that I did.

Specifically, used my body weight and inertia to slam into an inflatable lay-down pop-can bunker to send my opponent flying out the other side. (Newton's law) I did this a few years ago at a tournament that allowed it. The results were just about the same as drawn in the cartoon, total garage sale from the victim and he went staggering backwards. And It did eliminate my victin as well, just like drawn up in the cartoon. Almost shot for shot, what I DID.

Geez,it's bad enough that I'm being plagarised in two other magazines and other web pages, now my life is being plagirised too. When everyone copied my squeegie on a lanyard, I didn't complain. Then people copied my use of stickers on goggle visors. Still, I never said a word. When everyone copied my use of a "Diablo" sticker on the battery pack of a revvy, I didn't make a big fuss about it. THEN everyone copied my use of shorts playing indoor and speedball. I was way ahead of the curve when I wore knee and shin guards at an indoor field back in '93. And I was wearing orange and black tiger stripes LONG before BUNKER KING came out with theirs! And recently I've heard rumors of some people other than me wearing "ears and tail" getups while playing.

The world is full of posers.

Ah, it's the sincerest form of flattery. :p
Maybe you could start your own line of paintball gear, with Tony the tiger as your spokes-model.
By the way, great article in the new PGI, very useful to me as I start my preparation for the UK N vs S game, Thanks!

Something lil ol' moi has noticed...

PGI spends a lotta cash getting into new countries, increasing its distribution, lowering subscription prices, getting on sale in dedicated sports stores - all good promo for the sport.

And Facefull, well, seeing that it ain't got a barcode on I suspect it ain't actually gettin' out to non-players, so it ain't promoting the sport as such...

Just my humble opinion you understand...

peace

I agree they each serve a purpose.

The main selling point of FaceFull is the pictures which are superb and PGI's strength lies in it's editorial.

But considering PGI has now had a couple of "facefull-like" pics at the front the last couple of issues they've proved that they can easily hold their own in that department as well.

So Ant - why don't you dedicate the December or Jan issue (which are always slow "news" months) to an annual just of the great pics and stories you've accumulated over the year. throw in a couple of "how to prepare for the new season" articles plus new kit from the world cup and I think your all set.

Every snowboard mag does the same and they always the ones I buy religiously. Plus, after spending that effort getting into the sports stores (all power to you for that) then an annual type thing would make a great "one hit" mag that the non-paintballer can really get into.

Reverse order :

You're welcome!

If I put tony the tiger a a spokesmodel, wouldnm't I be a cerial poser?

And it may be the sincerest form of flattery, but after the 5th thing, come on...

Beaker : Snowboarding. Last day of the season for me was Saturday. Total slop, sluch on a mountain. I loved every second of it! But I don't buy snowboard mags, I just ride. I buy gear as I need it. I don't keep up with the pros, but I do watch the X-games and the olympics. I don't buy into the tech-crap of boards. I just step in and ride. I'm like a typical rec-baller of snowboarding. :)

Tyger - you da' man :D

I only buy the mags for the pics, some of which are just stunning. That and I just buy stuff 'cause I want it - like my Flow boots and bindings which I have yet to really use in anger! :)

Next winter I hope to do a season in the States so may require a guide around some backcountry stashes if our paths cross??
