PGI mag - not what it used to be...

rancid

Mother, is that you?
****in nora', why don't people listen. Mr Walker - it wont work. It's my f in job to know these things. It wouldn't work. What part of 'it wouldn't work' don't you understand?

Knitting Monthly - I think you'll find there's no such magazine, what you are thinking about is Knitting Machine Monthly. It has 4k of ad revenue (at best) and sells 1200 copies. It has been sold and passed on by most publishers in the uk - how do I know? cos I'm offered it every three months! Train monthly - there's no such magaine, what you are clearly thinking about is Railway magazine - it sells 32,000 copies a month - there aint 32000 paintballers in the uk. What other mags do you want to bring into the argument.

Hey, didn't i read that you though what paintball gear was crap as well.

Right, I've given too much away. I'm changing my 'name' and not posting on this thread anymore.

I'm not sitting on the bloody fence ..I'm on Holiday! But rather than you thinking that I don't care I'll put my two penneth in.

Firstly PGI is great.

Its got better in recent years because of a confidence to 'tell the truth" not just say things that the organisers and will be happy with... From my opinion this keeps me on my toes, to go one better than the last one and to know where for example Jerry went wrong or Laurent excelled etc.

To this end we all get pissed off when the magazine misses something that we have done. THis rarely happpens but reinforces the importance we put on its stamp of approval. The Campaign Cup takes a year to organise. The running of the event nearly kills me, the blood pressure reaches boiling point, but the motivatation behind putting on a good show is knowing that after the event is dead and gone it can still be remembered time and again in print.

Why is there a shortage of tournaments? Well someone posted the other day that tournaments are a business. Sorry my friend they make a **** business, one which makes no money. Unless you are prepared to run a half assed event and take the piss out of the players then there is no profit in them..full stop. I run Campaign because its the oldest established event and pride will not let me stop. I benefit from the kudos.

If there was a BIG demand for woodland tournaments I would re-open the Wicked site, but there isn't so I wont! Probably the same criteria PGI uses when deciding what to cover.

On a lighter note PGI deserves special praise for the following.

Avoiding the caption "Piling on the Pressure" which appears in every other publication.
Printing petes article even if they seem a bit similar to last months. We still love them. (About time we had another on playing tight)
Blackjack, Leviathon, Pay the Piper...all the gems that make us giggle.

Keep up the good work.
:D :D

Events

Magued,
I would be interested to hear what you (as a successful promoter) have got to say concerning the state of tournaments over here in the UK as against the ones I previously mentioned.
Your Swedish Millennium event is one of the most popular events in the Paintball calendar and is attended by teams from all over the World.
Please give us some insight as to the criteria you adhere to when promoting your event !!!
Cheers Mag
Pete
PS Come on Niall, u got a view on this as well, don't sit on the fence on this one, help us out here !!!

Robbo.

Its no secret you have said it alot of times. Looooonnnggggg Dollars!

It takes time and you will loose money if you want to do a event like the Millenium series.
I lost money basicilly the first year and the second year.. Alot.
But ask Niall he is the one you have in UK that fully understand your argument.

Give the players and the media what they want. Give the players something extra and think about what you as a player would want from a event.

You have to be able to finance a loss, dont think you will make any money.

Work alot on the small details, thats what makes a event special.

And dont forget the must haves

1. good reffs
2. Air supply that works good
3. Netting
4. good food
5. Grand stands
6. Media
7. huge staff

The extras is

Music
Girls
party
Stadium or something that will apply to the outside spectators

Im sure I forget something but I think you got the picture..

Walker,
what part of 'ignorant pr#ck' might you have a problem in interpreting ?
None I hope !!!
Most people who post on these boards tend to read the posts that precede their own, you obviously don't, well if you do, you obviously don't understand them which is difficult to believe since all the ones I have seen are written in pretty straight forward English.
The only thing I can conclude is, you are an ignorant pr#ck, hence the way I started this post.
It's no good going 'jeeeez, just putting forward my point of view' if you are going to ignore all that is said before you and your point of view has more holes in it than a colander.
And just because you 'hold' a point of view doesn't automatically guarantee that that view should be respected or even listened to.
After all, the flat earth society was alive and well and around for hundreds of years but like you, they just held an opinion...understand ?....or do you want me to draw little pictures for you ?

hey rancid while you in the numbers mood how many does PGI shift in the UK each month? or is that a trade secret?

so anyway looking at the posts here, hell would freeze over before PGI or p8ntballer does a UK or Europe REC/NOV sister publication. does someone else see a market there? what sort of research do you do? who do you ask? do you ask the likes of planet, WDP, phoenix, etc.. as to how many guns and how much paint they have sold to the domestic (UK) market? how many site have you asked about the numbers of players they have had in the last year and how many new site have started up in the UK? i'm not saying how to do your job rancid, please dont take this post in that way. i dont know jack about what you do or how you do it. i know what you mean about advertisers, theres not many companies left in the UK who could put enough £££ in to it. unless the price was more attractive to site advertisers like it used to be. its difficult these days for new shops or companies to start up as it seems the UK companies that make paintball stuff or import gear also retail it. makes it difficult for a new retailer to make a decent profit when the distributor sells as well. add mail order via the internet and a 'shop' as we know it wont last too long, but thats a totally different issue.

ok so PGI does not want to cover UK events that are not up to the standard of the NPPL or millennium, thats fair enough as you market is world-wide and you need to show the glitzy side of things, i see that now. however it does not mean that we can just sweep UK events under the carpet as not worth bothering about at all. you may not think that the 'cowshed' event as you call it is worth bothering about but for those who are attending (myself included) its the biggest UK event until mayhem.

as you say we need to promote events better. if it was not for PGI and these forums how would you average player find out about tournies? how would a new recballer wanting to move up even know if there were any tournies at all? this is what i'm after. we need something that is aimed at new and AM players.

75 replies to a post in a little over 24 hours, is that some kind of record?;)

Having just moved to the UK I'm pretty new to the scene here but here's my two cents worth.

Back home in South Africa we could only ever get one magazine, which was PGI, although it was always 2 months delayed we kept up with the news both in the UK and America. It was always relevant 'cause it was about paintball and where the newest shakers and movers were. Wether it was in the UK or America was irrelevant 'cause we were so far way away from both places. Thats all we needed, was the latest and greatest news and reviews and to be kept up to date.

Now that I'm in the UK and get the latest PGI every month (my mates back home in S.A. are very jealous by the way about this) it still keeps it's reader in the know. I joined the UKPSF and got their latest copy of WORD which had an artcile in it by Robbo where he was defending himself against accusations that PGI had deserted the UK scene. Seems to be a tired arguement on his side. A shame really, as he could be using his time to give paintballers more useful information rather than wasting his time educating the ignorant.

Well thats my "outsider's" opinion. Flame me all you want but I'll still be getting my copy of PGI every month and still stay informed.

Argh! Mate, I'm not from the UK, and even I know this! Ever heard of the UKPSF? Steve Bull? All you want is there, you are just looking at the wrong places. When you want a second hand Ford Escort, you're not going to a Rolls Royce dealer, now are you?
