I bin working on this piece for pball-specific fitness, and a couple of tha drills got me thinking bout the martial arts and the link between ball and fighting. It's amazing how many top players are/were martial artists - off the top of my head you got Rich Trelford (shootfighting), Jacko Parsons (Shotokan), Robo, Dave Stewart, Marcus Davis (boxing), Erik Felix (Karate), Keith Williams (Tae Kwon do)...the list goes on.

Just on this forum ya got myself and Manning (Wing Chun and a few other styles thrown in), Buddha 3 (Pencak Silat if I remember rightly)...

So, 3 questions:

1 - Who else on the forum is/was a martial artist
2 - Which other famous players are
3 - Why do martial artists make good ballers?

Peace

I started studying wing chun around 7 months ago
with master samuel kwok ( he is one of the best taught by ip chun)
question 2 - hear bully does sumo wrestling with ledz :D
3 - Because it improves awareness and mobility
i'm waiting for the day i'm fast enough to catch the balls and throw them back.
cheers

1 . I have some very limited experience in karate
2 . dont know
3 . I'd say because doing marshall arts helps build reflexes and hand eye coordination . also people who do marshall arts seeem easier to convince to come out for a day of pballing .

1) Pencak Silat, like you rightly remembered.
2) Their not famous, but I've got a Jiu Jitsu guy and a Karate guy on the team. Also, one of my front guys is a breakdancer, which uses similar moves.
3) No idea, but I think that perhaps both forms of sport appeal to the same part of the brain. Perhaps because they both are about a controlled form of aggression?

If i'm not mistaken shotokan is one of the many styles of karate and are not two different martial arts. Anyway back to the questions:
1. Me, studing shotokan karate for 7 years
2. Dunno
3. Because it helps us waste other teams in more ways than one? Or maybe its just a concidence, as martial arts are very popular at the moment

While away in Turkey I will be looking into some form of Martial Art to kill some time. One of my favorites is Kok Sol Wan which if I remember correctly helps with hand eye cordination as well as sefl control as all other arts offer. That controled Kaos that one needs to break open a game! Hmmmmm:D
