Paintchecks & Playing On

I was asked an interesting question the other day about getting paintchecks & playing on, & realised I couldn't really answer it as, as far as I could see, it mainly came down to the view of an individual marshall.

OK, say you think you may have taken a hit, but really, honestly & genuinely aren't sure (this isn't as unlikely as it sounds if you play woodland). It's in a place you can't see, e.g. pack or somewhere else on your back. You call the marshall for a check & try to get as tight in as possible while waiting for him/her to come over but meanwhile are coming under fire. You know you can get the other player if only you could fire on them, but you really aren't sure whether you are still in or not. However, despite your yells for a check developing a note of desperation there is no sign of a marshall to give you that all-important check. Should you just sit tight & wait for the mug to take you out (as happened to the friend who asked me the question), or should you carry on playing & take the risk of being 1-4-1ed for playing on? Bear in mind that the person who asked me the question has an impeccable reputation for clean play & would be mortified if anyone thought they had cheated in any way. But this incident probably lost them the game so again something that left the player rather unhappy, especially as the original possible hit turned out not to have been one.

So lets have your views on what the player should have done, especially from those who marshall regularly. Please note this isn't a dig at marshalls either at that event or in general, as having done the thankless task I know it can be impossible to cover the whole field all the time.

Hi Liz

I think the situation is pretty cut and dry, if you are playing and you feel a hit, you have the self check area as we all know, if it is somewhere you either cannot see or indeed cannot feel then you scream for a paint check, if the marshal is not responding you play on, however as you play on you must also keep letting the Marshal know that although you may be playing on you are trying with all your might to play fair by screaming at him to check you as you stop the opposition gaining an advantage that you possibly can stop. Hows that.

Sid honest guvnor it was spray.

In a tourney situation chances r the opposition will have seen the hit and be screaming as much as you for the check, so no marshall coming then keep playing but as Sid said keep trying to get a marshall to see what is up with the hit and make no effort to hide it from them,

Yup as long as you are trying to get a ref to check your pack or whatever you can go ahead and play on....i am cannot remember the exact wording but i believe it says something to the effect that

when asking for a paint check on a hit that you cannot readily tell you must immediately ask for a check from a ref or teammate blah,blah,blah...and may continue to play until the check has been made but must repeatedly call for the check until it is made etc,etc,.....

Thanks guys. This person was particularly concerned because a similar situation happened last year & though not 1-4-1'd at the time was accused at a later date of playing on & therefore cheating. I'll pass on everyone's responses asap.

You cannot be 141'd if the hit is not obvious, if you get shot in the back for example when u run past some guy, your not expected to stand there goin "duuh judge im not quite sure if im tagged", its the judges responsibility to pull you (if it burst).
Now if you get shot in the lense and continue to mug half a team...then you can expect the penalties (or maybe not depending how the judge viewed things:p )

Most seem to be answering as if the situation is tourney.

What about a rec game? Would it not be possible to call yourself neutral, call out to the opposition to state you're coming out, then get them to check it?

May sound idealistic but, if you're playing with people you know to be standup players, it should be possible.
