Just seen this on the news, and the legislation has passed, it was an announcement by a policeman!

Apparently, new legislation means that any air weapon in the north west now needs to be licenced, or it's owner may face a 5 YEAR prison sentence. Can anyone elaborate?!

If this is true, this means no paintball guns for those under 16, and new registration charges anytime that someone buys a new marker, and there may be a limit as to how many markers you can own (May upset the marker tarts!!).

Nothing new

Here in Jersey, a Class 'A' Firearms Licence has always been required.

IMO it is a good thing, it regulates who can and cannot have a marker thus reducing the risk of 'twats' misusing them.

This has been covered before here. ;)

For those who can't be bothered to read it all, this is Steve's post:

Only just looked ta this post - very interesting.

Yes the UKPSF are aware of the press release in March re tightening of the law and have been told that the aim is to increase the age of ownership (purchase) as most incidents are young kids shooting cats etc.... and of course one another.

The UKPSF has a good relationship with the Home Office, the Chief Constables Association and local firearms officiers. They all feel the problem is kids with air rifles AND people with replica guns that are BB guns, paintball markers don't look like guns and therefore they seem happy with the paintball marker.

Registration was tried several years ago and we had a handful of forms returned.

Yes the more members there are the more powerful the UKPSF is when negotiating with authority. Most goverment officiers and local authorities now use the UKPSF to supply information. Sites are being inspected by local authorities and the UKPSF site guidelines are used as the benchmark. Several trading standards officiers have contacted the UKPSF for help when they have a situation where a PB marker is involved.

The WORD is a good read so join now it is only £5, email steve@ukpsf.com and I will send you a membership form

Sorry web site has a server problem at present

Steve

Also, here is a press release from Gloucestershire constabulary (dated last month):

What they have done is Put air cartridge revolvers/rifles on to Firearms certificate for those that have one and want to keep it....also, they have increased the age of legal ownership from 14 to 17...you still have to be 17 to buy one.....not sure about the supervision bit, you used to have to be supervised by someone over 21 if you were under 17...i think....:D

You always had to be over 17 to BUY a marker, though you can legally OWN one over the age of 14 (just that someone else would have to do the actual purchase for you). Under 14 you can't be the legal owner, it has to be a parent, guardian or some other adult.
I was told recently that it's just air weapons powered by a cartridge that need to be registered, and that those running off a tank are OK. So no more markers powered by the old 12 grams without registration, but just about all the modern markers don't need it.
