Our sport, an accident waiting to happen??

Over the past few weeks theres been some more threads about safety issues in paintball. I'm just wondering what it is going to take for a more encompassing approach to the safety of players to happen?

I know there are some things in place already which are in the interests of safety. But it appears to me that unless it is blatantly obvious or regulated by the government then it is overlooked??!!

For example, we are all made to wear goggles to protect the eyes (blatantly obvious).

We are all made to have our bottles tested to ensure there safety (government ruling).

What about things like :

1. The pressures lines and fittings are tested to? A case in point being Iain from the Northern Outkasts being injured??!! Isn't it about time these are regulated too?

2. The use of compressed air on site and how it is maintained etc. The only one to be honest I fully trust is H-pacs because you know they know what they are doing. But what is there out there to regulate our use of it, and all the people carrying filled dive tanks etc around in there cars with little thought as to what it can potentially do.

3. The many numbers of people who try to 'repair' there kit, especially relating to air systems that know a little about there workings. Sorry but I wouldn't try and change my breaks in my car if I didn't know what I was doing, so why do people try and fix things which are so potentially dangerous with the same level of knowledge?

Is it just a cast that unless we are told by the government that we don't, even when we see potential safety issues address them?

Before I get flamed for any of the above, I have at some time committed the above offences :) But use now some common sense when it comes to things like, the fittings I use etc. I just wonder how many people there are out there without the same aptitude...

How many times have you looked at the guy next to you at the chrono station and thought... that marker and air system look really old, with haggard looking fittings and took a step back from him :)

Your thoughts please :)

EDIT: Also wanted to add I'm not trying to envoke some kind of scare. Just wanting some rational thought :)

I 100% agree with all 3 points.

But where would you draw the line the the pressure of hosing? Since its so different from marker setup to marker setup.

On point 3 though, I agree in theory that if someone doesn't know what they are doing in terms of repairing/taking part there kit and then doing the fixing (to save sending it away for a proper service) its down the the person/player to dicide when somethings out of there hands. But at the end of the day your kit is your responsibility and if something happensresulting from your kit then the fingers going to be pointing at the owner, not your mate down the pub that gave it a service

Hope that makes sense.....

Should be like a gas boiler mate.......... if I messed with mine I'd not get away with it.
Some of the stuff we do may be illegal anyway........ no-ones spotted us yet.

Note Iain was injured abroad were we have minimal control
The rules are in place and they are probably the most stringent in Europe. The problem is enforcement. The HSE has inspectors, but no where near enough, so the way the law is worded it makes owners and operators responsible for implimenting safety. The punishment for lapses in safety are very severe but normally some thing has to happen first for action to be taken. Therefore if you see something that is unsafe report it to the owner/operator. If he/she does nothing you have done as much as you can without going direct to the HSE

I agree with the points Dave has raised.

Most players like to "tinker" with their guns/air, to get better performance, or just fix a leak, or fit a new drop and move the tank.
How many times have you laughed at a team mate, who's gun is not working because he/she has "tinkered" with it, or wanted to kill him/her cause its at a tourny, and you only got 5 mins to get to the field???

Something else to consider.

How do you know the guy/girl you give your marker to, is qualified to fix it?? We all know its cheaper and faster to get someone local to fix it, than to send it back to the maker.

We all have team mates who are good with markers, but do they have any offical training??
Would you let your mate fix your brakes, just cause he says he knows what he is doing??

All good points guys, the trouble is, safety costs, and inherently we cut corners, find something a couple of quid cheaper than what we are supposed to be using. These things need looking at, by our governing body. Products that are known to be a problem should be banned from tourney use, it's as easy as that. If you can't play with it, then you won't use it.
As far as hose and fittings are concerned, i feel we have that sorted, but there are many other safety factors that need looking at.

I can say with conviction that I really don't like the plastic hose from the bottle to the reg. I was fixing some onto my marker and powered it up and the split while next to my ear. Not a happy bunny. I don't bloody touch anything now, just take everything to
Phoenix and say in a pathetic voice " it's broken, please fix it", but I agree with the standards needing to be higher.

You've not been using my high pressure push fits and hose. I had the same problem until i sorted these beauties. No problems now.

Jose, how come you haven't tried them yet..???
