Why, because it's not as serious the first time they get caught cheating???
Like I said, this is no exact science and opinions are like, well, you know...

But, the legal system of your and my home country very often uses "ramping" penalties, that is, lighter and then subsequent harsher penalties.

I really don't know what the answer should be but I do believe we need harsher penalties in Millennium 7-player.

So the robot does work... and many of the 'cheater modes' aren't switched 'on and off'... (currently anyway!)

Things become more interesting...
Your observation that 'cheater modes aren't switched on and off' on the basis of catching one player where it wasn't switched off is a dangerous and erroneous assumption to make mate.

How would you know the markers that passed the robot test did not have any cheater mode switched off ?

This is a false premise to work on mate and I think there should be a 'belt and braces' attitude of testing and on-field observation effected, this time they tallied - more work needs to be done.
Well done the NPPL guys but we have a long way to go irradicate this cancer from our game.

I think the severity of the penalty doesn't necessarily match the crime but in this case, I think it appropriate because it sends the right messages out.
It is a TEAM responsibility to make damn sure all markers conform to the rules because ultimately, it is the TEAM who benefit from the misuse of that marker.
Ban the team for any designer cheat and err on the side of severity rather than leniency, leniency always leads to more cheating all the time 'people' are involved.

The gun was borrowed from an ex-Hurricane player, currently on an NXL team.

The gun was a backup. Just something to have if we needed it. Every game we brought 2 extra markers to the field and since the team has 6 kids whose gun-care skills are, shall we say, dubious, the backups ended up on the field a lot. The DM4 ended up getting used 2 times, I believe, when markers went down at the chrony. One game the marker was used by one player. The second time by a different player. The first player never said anything about ramp, neither did the player who borrowed the marker, so I never thought anything of it.

That said, the rule is very clear and the DQ was the appropriate action for the NPPL and Phil Dominguez to take. Intentional or otherwise, the responsibility lies with the player and the team. Even if we didn't know that there was ramp (and what I am saying above is that we didn't), it was our responsibility to know. We screw the pooch, we pay the price. Let me be the first to state that this is one of the things that makes the NPPL as great as it is. Phil is an ex-team mate of mine, and a friend, and he looked me in the eye and sent me home. And while I didn't like it, I accept it and I respect that the league in didn't allow me to sweet talk, bully or bribe my way out of it.

So, in short, what I am 'alleging' (btw, that doesn't require quotes) is:
1. We borrowed the marker and did not realize there was ramp.
2. It doesn't matter that we borrowed the marker and did not realize there was ramp.
3. The NPPL followed their rulebook to the letter of the law, and assessed the penalty in accordance with the rules despite any league sponsorship or personal ties and affiliations between the involved parties. As long as that same level of diligence is applied evenly to all cases, then the NPPL is doing their job with excellence.

I admire the way you take the medicine, JtJ. And obviously the way Phil and NPPL handled it is the way things should be. Maybe some good will come out of this in that teams will start covering what has always supposed to have been their responsibilities as the major leagues start taking their (our) responsibility to clamp down. It's just too bad the less guilty will probably get it stuck to them (like it seems to be in this case) compared to the sophisticated, systematic cheaters.

Not just a fairy tale

And there was me thinking that the chrony robot was what fairy tales were made of. Good to see that it actually works and is being used.
Is this robot not used in the NXL ?.

They had an illegal player (a pro) on their roster and therefore were DQ'ed.

I hear Sedition (Chris Cole's new team), Infamous (Miami Effect), Dynasty and Dogs made it through to the semi-finals.
And Dynasty and Infamous eventually making it thru to the finals.
First game just starting now.
