Every state has an alternate name i.e. New Jersey is the Garden State, NY is the Empire State, CA is the Golden State. There is a basketball team called the Golden State Warriors based in the capital of Sacramento. For the Ironmen to be "Golden State" implies that they don't associate with any specific city (eg, San Diego Dynasty/Aftermath) and just the State in general.
I know this cuz I lived there for 27 years
