I think it is the future. So many aspects of it were much improved over paintball of the past. Crowd participation was great. The stands were always packed and the games were intense.
The rain problems didn't force us to play in the thunderstorms; being that it's a season we simply rescheduled the games for later in the year.
Also, playing 20 games against another team really helps determine who is actually better. If its only 1 or 2 games in the finals in the original format a team can get lucky but it's hard to get lucky for roughly 20 straight games.
Teamwise, my impression is that the best three teams are Philly, Oakland and NY. Those teams will all be playing in LA so within 2 weeks we should be able to get a good idea of who is going to lead the way through the season.
Although I didnt play at Mardis Gras we did play a lot of matches in Florida this offseason (where we used 3 lineups instead of 2 so I got to play) and one thing I love about it is being able to watch your teammates. Normally you dont get to watch your teammates play (unless you decide to sit which sucks) but with this format you watch the other lineups play and then go in immediately after. Its fun to root for your boys and then turn around and have them rooting for you.
We also all agreed that the reffing is the best we've seen in a long time (maybe ever). There are 9 on the field for only 10 guys and the Eye-in-the-sky ref is making calls from the tower as well.
Also, being that there are no individual tournament prizes (only a season-end championship payout) teams will be forced to start paying players to keep them. Many teams have already started to do this and trust me, players getting paid to do what they love is always a good thing.
I suppose my only complain is the time required. I've flown out of town every 2 weekends during the first part of the year for what was practice matches for the rest of the team and tryouts for about 6 of us and then wed-monday at mardis gras and next week wed-monday at LA. Thats a lot of time committment but its worth it.
