Pete, I have to disagree here. The same people who ran the reffing the past two years are the same people running the reffing now, using the same system. It's one thing to inherit the problem, it's another thing to do absolutely nothing to fix it. I don't know if Dave and Dan just don't have the resources/environment/support to do what they need to do (although I think the existence of Dave *AND* Dan in the dual-weird-role they have now is part of the problem, you just can't have two ultimates) or if Dave and Dan are the problem (they're certainly nice and smart guys, but nice isn't necessarily a good personality trait for ultimate), but I do know that what NPPL is doing now with reffing is the same thing they were doing in 2005 and 2006.

But, that's a bit beside the point. The reffing was not the cause of the problems in the finals. Nobody involved in the reffing made the decision to allow a tie finish. I'm also pretty sure that the decision to overturn the 2nd game's result was Shawn's as well. And it's not just that those individual decisions were bad - by the time Shawn was making those decisions it was already too late. The only right decision for Shawn was to stay in the announcement booth and let the officials make the decision and accept it no matter what that decision is. If Shawn doesn't feel like he can do that, he needs to immediately make whatever changes are necessary so that when San Diego rolls around he will not feel like he needs to be on the field involved in the officiating in any way. The Ultimate can't do his job right if he's not actually the ultimate, and you also do yourself a favor as the league President by isolating yourself from any direct involvement in the officiating. Almost every call is going to have a loser, and it's far better if the losing team is at least mad at the ultimate you hired instead of mad at you personally.

There are definitely some things that Shawn and NPPL have going on where they are kicking everyone's ass. But this set of decisions were definitely mistakes, and it would be a huge mistake to not realize it, accept it, apologize for it, and make changes to prevent a repeat.

So, what happened with the flag then, did the other team get first flag pull, and move said flag, or was it just the ref's fault and the flag never got replaced where it shoulda been?

If the other team had moved the flag during the game, then Joy couldn't find it then, I could sympathise because the refs aren't allowed to tell you where it is.

But, if it was totally the refs fault and they didn't put the flag where it shoulda been, then that's pretty damn awful, and it looks like once again you've been cheated by a very bad decision.

As a guy above said, whatever happened, you know your fans are still 100% behind you and respect you soo much for all the time and effort you put in.

And...deja vous anyone? This has happened before, where the owner/person who isn't the ultimate has come on, and interfered, and not to the benefit of anyone.

It's 7-man, dual flags. The other team isn't allowed to touch the flag at all.

Magued your team is a credit to European paintball. Every single player who doesnt play for Joy should look to your players above all others, for inspiration.

I know what keeps happening is gutting and insane, but we all feel a bit of that pain each time it happens. As fans its hard not to.

You make us feel proud.

Magued...

Magued, I met you and the rest of the team at the 2001 Mardi Gras Open. Ya'll were a great bunch of players and fun to be around. I, and the rest of my team at the time, became fans of Joy Division right then. I quit paintball later that year and came back in 2006 to find ya'll are still together and have now become one of the top teams in the NPPL. I watched the OC game on video where ya'll got screwed and heard about this call on the webcast. I just wanted to tell ya'll not to give up because you not only have a lot of Euro fans, but a lot of fans here in the US as well. I root for you guys over most of our homegrown teams even. So even though the refs may not show ya'll any love, a lot of the fans here do.

Chris, this is the first time I have heard of Shawn's involvement in this and if he did become entangled in what was going down, he should have stayed well out of it and allowed the rule book to determine direction.

And so I doubt there is any significant difference between yours or my opinion on what went down.
