For me it was a lot more fun back in the day , also i was not responsible for anyone or anything :):)

Just to add to the thought off more QUALITY events as in ,the competition that turns up .

When was the last time that all the quality teams from the UK played against each other at the same event ???

I know the answer as will Pete and Jim

Trust me the answer is very sad indeed

On another not i would love to see a league with all the quality teams UK teams playing against each other ,mirroring the MS format ?? question begs would this turn into a pisssing contest ???

I voted the last option.

I feel you can't really compare the two. Over the years tournament paintball has taken on a much more "sporty" appearance. Although most players hardly deserve the title of athlete, the game itself has developed into something worthy of the title sport, whereas it used to be more of a game in the olden days.

One isn't better or worse than the other, they're just different.

BUT... (there's always one of those)... what has really changed and what is comparable, is the atmosphere. I just liked the feel back in the days a lot more. The scene was a lot smaller and everybody knew each other. Sure, there were no bands, cheerleaders and stadiums as a backdrop to an event, but it was always fun. It attracted a different type of person as well. There seemed to be a far greater numer of hardasses back in the day. Nowadays I see kids who struggle to lift a fully loaded marker, because they're arms are too spindly. :D Paintball has gone from attracting the cast of Snatch/Lock-Stock, to attracting nerdy folks who had to chose between paintball and skateboarding. Since I fit in better with the former, that was more fun for me. I guess it works the other way round for others.

Personally i wasn't there back in the day, but i think like any sport it can get really competative, and this can sometimes throw alot of people off..

I'm guessing it wasn't as competative back then as it is now.. correct me if im wrong!

but thats why alot of guys play in the woods, its about guys getting together and have a good fun day, where they can enjoy themselves, and there is some competativeness.. but it's all out of fun, to say you beat your friend, and tease him for a few days afterwards.. then see who wins again next month!!

I have spoken to quite a few tourny players who have come to a woodland big game/walk on, and they comment on how its nice to get away from the competativeness and just have a days paintball where it's all in the name of fun..

I play in the woods.. and have yet to try tounry paintball.. so i can't compare the two, but thats the reason i intend to stay in the woods, because it's fun!!

So when the game was just in the woods, im guessing some people enjoyed it more because they had more fun!! but others may prefer it with a more competative side!!

I can't comment from a personal view because I'm just starting out, but Jonny's been playing 11 or 12 years now and he goes on about how much more fun woodsball was and how much of a better atmospehere it was ect but still turns up to training every week even though we train on a field behind a recball site, so he could easily play woodsball if he really wanted to.

So I'd imagine that it's hard to compare the two since the fun and atmosphere of woodball don't seem to match up to the speed and skill of touri/supair ball or everyone who gets in a 'back in the day' mood would woodsball, and they don't.

Just the way I see it. It's hard for me to know if things are different because the sport is different, or if things are different because the attitudes and people are different. Ask me in 10 years time :p

Ok, well without having played an oldschool woods tourney I wouldnt know, but I consider the options between the 2.

First off, I think the fun potential in Woods is higher, I mean thats why I play ball for fun. On supair theres only so many combinations of blow up bunkers and rules that can be done, but baisicly at the end of the day the tactics are all pretty much the same, and the baisic play of any feild all ends up the same. It would be like adding another ball into a game of footy, the baisic idea of the game of gettin the balls into the goal stays the same...

Vs Woods, where it may not always be on even playing feilds, bunkers and barricades might not always be almost perfectly identical, and the potential to change tactics and play is much higher than supair,

Point 2, Location and availability.
Although not much of a player factor, the cost of supair bunkers is pretty steep, plus the need for a decent ammount of feilds in a tournament, its a pretty heavy investment for any site to be able to set up a tournament on a decent scale. So unless a site is going to make it worthwhile with enough turnover to make servicing, setup and take down the bunkers why would they bother to run a tournament? This leaves a few people / organisations who actually put the effort in to make this commitment, to buy the equipment and set up the tournaments, this leads to a very limited tournament scene baised int he UK, especialy since travel expenses to some of the locations can be a large factor for some teams. This also leaves out a HUGE player base, how many teams do you see playing with tipmans?

vs Woods, Any site in the UK could run a tournament. And could probably get a much larger turnout if you included the punters. I think a lot of the average punters would if given the chance take part in a woodball baised tournament, they can use tippys, turn up with a few mates and call it a team. The sites could offer a large discount on the paint to the punters and pro players could bring their own. The baisic costs of equipment, eg supair bunkers are negligible as most sites will allready have the markers ready to play, and no time wasted setting up and cleaning down the bunkers at the end of the day.

Finally, cost vs Prizes.
Now the average sup-air tournament is pretty expensive, most players can see this. Unless at a site you have to pay for catering, the Air, marshals, rent (on the feild possibly), toilet facilities, the prizes of course, probably a few extra things. All this has to be covered in the enterence cost for the teams, top this with travel expenses and you end up having a pretty expensive payout every tournament.

Now at a woodsball park, most of these costs would already be covered, most sites have catering facilities (limited as they are) Air compressors, marshals at hand, toilet's. All this is taken off the initial cost. That would leave you with the cost of prizes and the marshals to be covered in entry costs.

Needless to say, this along with the potential for more teams in the form of punters could lead to a much cheaper tournament for all, with still good prizes and a good days ball.

The Holy Grail!
TV coverage, now every baller has discussed it, and everyone has dreams of getting paintball onto TV. But I believe that woodsball or scenario would be MUCH more apealing to put on TV due to people who don't play supair can more easily relate to it. Not much to say here, apart from that I think covering a tournament in the woods or on scenario land would be much easier.

Now overall in this post, its pretty obvious im more of a fan of woodsball baised tourneys, however I still think Sup-Air is a very good solid format to play, and currently the division of leaving supair to the "elitests" of the paintballers leaves out a huge player base in the UK. Should more advertised and organised Woodsball tournaments be introduced, involving the punters would bring the 2 sides of paintball together, as the supair side could be advertised to them at a woodsball tourney. I believe that it would bring the whole paintball scene in the UK forwards by a huge ammount.

Trust me, back in the days went at each other's throats just as easy. And I've seen more physical violence back in those days as well, even though the numbers attending were smaller... Plenty of competitiveness I'd say.
