No camo for punters

As a sport we have evolved a long way but one thing that remains constant is this:

Joe Public goes to a paintball site for the first time and is issued with his playing kit and overalls. These overalls will consist of either 2nd hand military camouflage/green boiler suit or a purpose made camoflage coverall. He then spends the whole day playing this amazing sport, either liking or hating depending on his mind set. When he goes home and speaks to colleagues/family and tells them what he did at the weekend the conversation will be something like " I played Paintball, you know the game where you dress up like soldiers......"

Now I know the above is simplified but it is true. We reinforce the 'weekend warrior' image everytime a new player comes into contact with this sport at a rental site. I know a lot of sites have modernised fields by including an Airball/Hyperball field and I applaud this. But I bet they didnt change the overalls!

Am I the only one who thinks its time for a change.

I believe sites should introduce plain brightly coloured overalls i.e. Red and Blue, to hopefully start losing this 'warrior' image. On a practical point it makes team distinction easier. Maybe a site could have shirts/overalls made up especially for its use, giving it a unique image. Whatever happens the sport becomes a winner because you are already getting the 'punter/public' seeing the sport as played by them for the first time closer to the sport that we now see in the arena.

No doubt someone will tell me of a site that already does the above. If they do, then my idea isnt completly mad, and I would love to hear the reactions it has got from their paying public. To those sites that do, congratulations, for trying to further the image of Paintball.

Red and blue might be a bit extreme, they do still like hiding up and camoflaging, what about black playing trousers and a slightly camo playing jersey? Might take away the "soldier clothes" image slightly? :)

I can see what you mean, and i am all for furthering the image of paintball in the eyes of the public. i cant see though, sites changing to brightly colored kit for their punters, after all, 99% of punter 'balling is played in the woods, where brightly coloured uniforms would give the positions of the players away instantly, resulting in shorter games, and less paint being shot. Seeing as paint is the area where sites make all their money i cant really see them implementing changes which would mean that less paint was shot and they thereofre made less money.

Unfortunately unless sites move to purely hyperball or airball fields and abandon the woods, this change will never happen. Which is a shame.

what's the problem with having punters play 'soldier' anyhow? Personally this is why i got into paintball, so what's the damage of letting punters play pretend.

It's what punters want to play, it's what they expect. It's industry, it's what makes the $$$ and it's why teams get paint for free, and we've got a strong industry backing us up.

I don't think one should ban camo, at least not at a recreational level.

I think your missing the point.

I didnt say ban camo anyway. I just wanted people to change it of their own free will to further the sport.

You right about the hiding/giving away postions, Red and Blue were just examples. Black trs and a JT (example again) would be a step in the right direction.

As for paint use, if the games were shorter, then by rights you should be able to fit more games into a day and then the spending on paint would still be the same. But dont even get me started on the price of paint to new players - hardly an incentive to come back when you think you need a second mortgage to play!

P.S.

I forgot the point about 'playing soldiers'

Thats the whole point of the thread!

Its to break the image of us being seen as 'soldiers' that I want to see. If youve been a player for the last 10-15 years then you have accepted coming out of the woods as the natural progression. I'm talking about getting the new players of today out of the woods and into an arena as quick as possible, even as spectators,so as to build this sports image into one of a sport everyone knows and understands, without prejudice.

And before you think I am anti rec-ball because of camo use, I'm not, but it is a distinctly different enviorment than the one I am aiming this change of clothing at!

That's why they come!

Sorry Mikey,

But pople come to a paintball field as a rental player to spend the day dressed in camo, roll around on the floor getting dirty and shooting poeple, this is the game in it's most basic form, and it's what a member of Joe Public will turn up at the local field and spend £50.00 + on a day there.

His £50.00 is what oils the wheels of this whole sport/industry, so no field owner will go against that formula, when they turn up with their faces painted in cammo goo, with a helmet they borrowed of their mate, they want to play soldiers! Why did you first go to play?

Mike R do you get paid for your job?

I do, and I wouldn't expect paintball site operators to work for nothing either. The price of paint incorporates so much more than the price of paint.

As much as we view our sport as such, we cannot get away from the origins of paintball. As previously said by Red our industry is backed up by people who want to dress up in camos, who want to crawl through mud on a cold wet day and who want to jump out from behind a tree and spray their mates with paint.

Paintball is not cheap, not at any level of the game. If people want to get into the game suggest they watch some tournaments see the moves on Super Air fields. In my opinion more exciting and more likely to attract people to our sport.

Advice to a new player, don't spend all your money on a marker and not be able to afford to play.

I play rec ball with a few of my friends on a regular basis.
Personally I dont wear cammo gear but purely for the reason that I have bought my own kit and would be silly not to wear it.
Rec ball is so much bigger than tourney and it makes me laugh how the vey small minority of paintballers tries to dictate what happens to the majority.

I dont think that paintball has a bad image because 1000's of punters stick on an old tattered boiler suit every weekend. Its because the basic principle in paintball is to shoot someone. What you wear whilst doing it is irrelevant

some places get away with using black or even dark blue overalls, obvioulsy because they're cheaper.
However if you're out shooting fools in the woods, then it makes sense to give the punters camo.
Sorry Mike, but making money wins over moral sensibility anyday.
