The fingers ain't fragile--they are, in all likelihood, tougher than you are and, no, there isn't tons of spillage under any circumstances. There is, on average, no spillage, except for those so careless as to miss the opening of the hopper when dumping their pots.
It wouldn't be very useful it was all the things you imagine and then, doh, nobody'd want one.
And yes, if it's raining stuff gets wet. I know, I know, that's never happened before. As for the rest of the possible horrors they aren't really a problem but that call will be up to anyone who may or may not decide they want one. Of course when everybody else is using it ...
