Sounds like the solenoid spool may be sticking? When was the last time it was stripped / cleaned?

This would also be a symptom of a low battery? (if it has a cricket board, it would chirp every few seconds)

If it's a bone stock impulse they do that when dry firing. Shouldn't do it with paint, but a tapeworm fixes it anyway.
