Tsunami Paintball Team

Tsunami Paintball Team (UK) are delighted to be travelling to Malaysia to participate in The Nations Cup 2004 and are very grateful for the help of the organisers in making this trip possible.

The team of 5 will be staying in Kuala Lumpur for a week and will take part in the ‘run-up’ to the tournament, aiming to help promote the sport of paintball in Malaysia.

Tsunami represent the town of Basingstoke in the UK’s Motorola Paintball Association National League. This season the team finished the league in 4th place, Div 2. Tsunami has promoted UK paintball this year by involving the media, with many reports and features published in local newspapers, on the BBC website and in PBUK, the UK’s own paintball magazine. Recently, one of our team was awarded ‘Paintball Association Player of the Year 2004’. We always strive to be one of the fairest and friendliest teams in UK paintball.

In the UK paintball has been played since the 1980s and we are fortunate to have paintball markers classified under our firearms act as ‘airguns’. This means that players don’t need a firearms certificate (licence) to keep their markers at home or transport them to and from tournaments. There are laws and restrictions concerning ‘airguns’ and UK paintballers are careful to behave responsibly concerning the Law. For instance, a paintball marker in the UK must not be capable of firing in any ‘mode’ other than semi-automatic (one trigger ‘cycle’ [pull and release] = one ball). The velocity of paintball markers must not exceed 320fps by law, although the tournament chronograph limit is 300fps so players always keep the velocity of their markers below this.

There are age restrictions for the ownership of paintball markers and where they can be used: markers can only be used on private land with the owner’s permission and not within a certain distance of a public right of way/highway. Rather than restrict the sport of paintball, we find that these laws enhance the safety of the sport by clearly defining how the markers can be used.
UK paintballers are fortunate to have a ‘advisory body’, the UKPSF, who keep them up to date with changes in the law regarding markers. The UKPSF was started by paintballers for paintballers and their representatives liase with the UK Government when proposed changes to the law, regarding airguns, may restrict the sport of paintball. Membership to the UKPSF has always been voluntary but the majority of UK ‘ballers’ appreciate its value and have joined the organisation to support its efforts. From 2005 many UK leagues, including the PA National League, are considering making UKPSF membership compulsory, for a small fee, and issuing photo ID cards for use at tournaments.

As yet, there is no official ‘marker register’ as many markers are not serial numbered and the many ‘custom’ markers on the UK scene make descriptions very confusing!

Many of Tsunami’s members work in the paintball industry full and part-time as marshals, airsmiths, suppliers and technicians. The players have a desire to help further the sport in any way they can.

Tsunami are very much looking forward to meeting the Malaysian teams and the team will be available for pre-tourney warm-ups, PR and general assistance.

Regards

Guppy (Player/PR officer)
