Dude, first tourney scary ****.
My first ever tourney we played a Pro team: Ignition (I think they're Swedish but can't remember), go figure, saying that though I made my bunker on the forty and stayed in for 6 minutes before being mugged so not too bad. After that every thing gets a little easier. The butterflies will never go away, especially at the beginning of the day, but I'd say, always talk over the break plan with your team captain. If you feel uncomfortable with your primary say you don't think it's achievable. It's always better to be in the game than over extend and lose players making too big a break. The 50's not always achievable if you don't think so, don't go for it but say so. Unless your playing Centre flag first grab, the 50's not always the best place to be (dependent on field layout). I spent my first 4 games ever being sent to the 50, until I piped up and said "don't think I can do it on these fields", the Capt turned round to me and said "well why didn't you say so, drop back!!!!" We then played out the rest of the break with me on shorter breaks and then doing an aggressive move up (by then my confidence had increased).
If it's your first ever tournament, I'd definitely ask for a shorter or safer break just to get your confidence up. The last thing your team will need is you shatting yourself on the break and pulling up short or going into someone's else's primary. You need to get a feel for the volume of paint being chucked and have the confidence to get out on the trigger. Believe me firepower is one of the biggest factors in winning games. My new team played our first tourney on Sunday, and although we lost two games out of 8 we probably outplayed the opposition in nearly every game (we lost games because of stupidity such as getting 1:4:1 and bad preparation). We basically went out to dominate the opposition and shoot alot of paint. For a 5 man tournament in a Novice division we shot nearly 10 cases of paint in 8 games (hence a lot). So remember trigger time is important get up and shoot paint, it does wonders for your confidence. Lying up in your bunker soaking up paint will dent your confidence if possible snap your way out, but at first just be comfortable shooting.
Other things you can do before your first ever tourney is prep up. Make sure you are checked onto the field by a team mate. Check you've got enough Paint, Squeegee, plenty of Nitro (air), and your Air system cannot not be adjusted on field (i.e.. done up tight). This will stop you having any onfield problems. I can't stress enough that you need to have your marker and air sorted, otherwise it may not be allowed on field. If you wanna know scary play a game without a marker (as I found out on Sunday)!!!! Papped me trolleys and then some. Also work on your calls and comms before the game you need to have the confidence that your all talking the same language on field! Lastly know the fields!!! Know where your going and everybody else on the team.
These things sound like commonsense, but try to remain calm and think your game through before you play, this will help you when the proverbial hits the fan. Yep you'll still have butterflies, but remove doubts from your mind through proper preparation and the only thing you should have to worry about is the other team mugging you!!!!
