because thats how these viruses work, as mike says, this is a virus of some form. what itll do is send a message to all/random people in their address book saying stupid things like "hey just seen a great pic of you" and then a link. or as in this case, send you a file directly. once you download it, then itll do exactly the same thing again, but from your msn aswel.

on a side note, if someone knows the answer to your secret question and answers it, msn will reset your password, meaning noone can find out what the original password was.

Ignore that secret question stuff, that's not what is going on here.

Its a trojan, just tell her to use an up to date scanner and do a full system scan. secondly, update MSN itself - I believe the latest version has its own built in virus scanner (don't quote me on that)

Mike
The problem was someone got onto their msn account......this is one of the possible ways of doing it...

not really. it would reset the password meaning the original person (who owns the account) wouldnt be able to log on again. also, the person would have to know the account holder very well to answer their secret question, how likely is it that a very close mate would do that?

Went to my neighbours house the other day to fix his pc.
Sooooo much pron on his PC I couldn't stop laughing........ till his wife entered the room :D

This should get rid of the random popups of people you dont know.
Tools-Options-Privacy- Put a tick in "Only people on my allow list can see my status and send me messages"
Will not stop messages from accounts that have been hacked though.
Best thing to do is do not download the file unless your 100% certain what the file is.
Watch for files with double extensions e.g. test.img.exe
Files to watch for are:
.scr
.doc (most of the time, innocent, but can also contain viruses)
.zip/.rar Compressed archive files which can contain viruses
As far as I can remember, exe (application files) are blocked on msn.

iv had this virus before, all it does it send a message along the lines of "hey mate, is this you in this photo? (enter random link here)" and if you click it, it self extracts in your computer and installs some adware and a couple viruses. It sends this to all your msn contacts every couple minutes or so.
The adware is called doctor something if i remember correctly, and youll have to properly search your computer to get rid of it all.
