I think getting the lift should be fine but you are right in the notion that the media has made everyone a bit paranoid.
they paint a picture that the entire world is full of murdering, raping pedophiles that are after your cash and innocence.
also in the case of your parents it could be the misconception about paintball that has made them a little wary.
by the way it wouldn't be the bunker walk on in November you are talking about.

I am sure you will be fine, even more so if it came from the site owner...

A few weeks back i Hitch-hiked to Prague for charity... I picked up lifts at the side of the motorway and service stations with people i had never met with no contact details or anything for anyone if i went missing...

And it was fine and i met some of the best people ever... Do not fear in a little generosity, just becuase the media says no1 does nothing for anyone anymore.

If your parents are so concerned give them him mobile number, give him a ring and explain and say ask for his address or car reg etc. sure he wont mind

Just 'ugly yourself up' a bit before he meets you. Don't clean your teeth for 3 days, and wear the same skivs for a week. Drop out how you had to nip down the clinic last night for a booster-jab. This way only the really sick pervs will take a liking to you, which is, well, somewhat comforting at least...

It makes me wonder if the media causes unecessary paranoia.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Mums worry and dads take the piss - it's in their job descriptions and lasts forever. Your dad worries too.

It is a big scary world out there, but it's also full of friendly people and great experiences.

You are 17 so should now be able to be out alone and take care of yourself, you know what you are doing and are switched on. Keep in touch with your parents while you are away, and if necessary get picked up from home and let your mum make a fuss over you as you leave. This will give her the opportunity to see who is picking you up, and for him to take the piss after driving off - you seem capable of taking it and it will serve as an ice-breaker.
