Simon, I believe the opposite problem exists: it's being way too delayed. If we advertised and marketed like Toulouse was done at that time and like EVERY OTHER GAME AND PRODUCT ON THE WHOLE DAMN FACE OF THE PLANET, we'd have as huge a following nearly every time. But for some reason the paintball community insists on sitting on its ass or tossing around stupid Disney **** ideas. All the goofing around with silly grenades, woods scenario games, etc. is just too clunky and it has been done with only very small success, not at all broad appeal.
Rules and regulations of tournaments being a problem? What could be simpler?!! Paintball's rules are among the simplest of any sport out there; people pay very good attention to sports that are much slower, unchanging, and apparently random. Don't assume that anyone in the public is enough of a moron to not be able to comprehend a paintball tourney on TV. Yes, yes, I know the people you see in the newspapers and TV and that you're led into believing that they are human beings, but believe me the audience you'd want to market paintball to is at least somewhat more intelligent than that.
What the hell are we so scared about? A lot of causes these days that don't have half the right to exist or brains that paintball has get complete credibility and news coverage simply because they grab the microphone and announce their presence. Yoga, for example, is complete and total nonsense but is visible nearly everywhere because it promotes itself. Corona is the worst liquid to ever be labeled beer, but because you see ads nearly every time you turn on the television it sells at nearly every bar, pub, and restaurant in the US and thousands of them in the UK.
Even though tons of people think things like that are total crap, millions obviously buy them regularly. But if they weren't advertised to the point of brainwashing, no one would ever touch them. Now why is it such a stretch to think that we can't do the same? Even if two million viewers see it and don't get it or change the channel, you can bet that at least as many will understand it and give it a second look.
It's more than worth the effort if you simply look at the odds.
