Ok good/bad points of the event:
1. Starting games was sometimes an issue
perhaps a start light hanging in the center of the field about 15 feet up (or whatever). much like nascar or f1. + light travels faster than sound.
At outside events lights are pretty hard to keep visible all the time- the score boards became pretty much unreadable when the sun was on them.
It has to be some sort of sound, and a signal from the refs (not all refs were doing the arm signals).
The refs never stopped games which were false started by another field's scoreboard, it ruined games, and in a lot of cases, if players false started, but then ran back and touched the gate before playing, they were still eliminated.
2. Little to no security at night, on the last night loads of stuff was left out including tools,
I had to go and stop a group of kids smashing the plastic chairs up with a hammer.
I don't understand, Belgium was totally over-killed on security, with dogs and guys on quadbikes out all night (which was nice, but we were in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere), but when we were in the middle of a fairly busy urban area, everyone just packed up and went home that I could see, leaving several grands worth of new field and equipment (scoreboards, generators, tools) unguarded.
Though Trevor was on hand to protect us in the truck (jumping out in boxers baseball in hand shouting "understand my spanish: f*** off!", appeared to scare off most people), I think I would have felt better if there was one or two guys walking around at night.
I felt security on the whole was good during the day, although if you had jumped over the wall or past the fences on the beach you could have walked right into the M5 players area and I did that a number of times during the weekend. To get into all other areas except M5, you needed to show wristbands or ID cards.
3. The turf was a nice surprise, actually seemed quite good (better than belgium I thought) and I didn't hear about anyone getting their kit damaged by sand like we thought.
4. Site was awesome, the public was walking past all day, asking questions, we got a lot of exposure.
Hotels, restaurants and bars were a minute's walk, and of course we were actually on the beach (there were topless women too which appeared to go down well
)
There were a lot of pikeys walking around though and stuff did go missing including a millennium laptop I heard.
5. The refs had to work almost 12 hours a day, but to their credit a lot of them were still running and throwing themselves around in the last game of the weekend.
I saw some bad decisions but then you see that in every tourney, and on the whole I thought the reffing was awesome.
6. It rained on monday before we left, the organizers were lucky it had stayed good over the weekend because one M5 field had no setup tents, and there was no big overall setup tent, or anywhere to shelter, had it rained. For somewhere as hot, it would have been good to get some shade on the go for players sitting around between games.
7. Field layout seemed fantastic, you could watch all the fields from the promenade, and there was seating for SPL and CPL (more would have been good, but there wasn't enough room on the path)
8 Trade stands were good, there were a lot there, and they seemed well set out.
9. I think the paint was too far away from the setup areas, even if it had been where the HPAC truck was, it would have been good, but it did seem like a long walk from the trade area down to the fields.
10. And I think the air was good
.
Can't comment on value for money because I didn't pay or play, but from an outsiders point of view I thought it looked fantastic aside from the few little niggling issues, and I would have been happy to pay to play there myself. SO much better than Belgium! (Belsham)
