The macroline fittings don't like it when the hose is at such an angle, and i feel that it will fail prematurely.
Try fitting a small on/off valve between the elbow and the gun lowering the elbow to the correct level of the reg. It doesn't have to be an on/off you could use a filter, or a one way restrictor, something small enough to lower the elbow. You could use a small close fitting elbow to turn the flow sideways, then a normal elbow set to angle down to the reg.

2 elbows from the reg sounds good, buy a male to female elbow from a pneumatics supplier and fit it between the reg and original elbow.

Similar to my set-up except mine's dual reg'ed but I've got a 90 degree elbow coming of my vertical Max-flo (so it faces the same way as plum's one), my bottom max-flo has the same fitting as plums, so you should be fine with this, you just need hose long enuff.
