Luck of the Irish is another derogatory English phrase......basicaly means being lucky and succeeding in spite of your shortcomings. So implies that an Irishman can achieve without talent.
There ya go, there's no specific root for it (like Murphy's law.. never was an original Murphy either) it just came into being, most people use it positively now, just thinking leprechauns and four leaf clover.
