yeh but been offered it for £550 and there are ones going for £300 so im just shopping about making sure i get a good deal

If your getting it for 550 id take it then, price for the buck that wont realy be beaten.

Go to Ebuyer mate and look at IBM Thinkpads (now Lenovo) they are the most reliable laptops ever ,business orientated as apposed to games machines and very very reliable,plenty in your price range at the mo as welll,OS is your preference but you'll get some cracking deals on ebuyer :)

I have to agree, had an old ThinkTANK as my work laptop, although it ate batteries it was bomb proof! Got my Ma a s/h one off ebay when she decided she wanted a laptop, my Dad killed it by accidentally pouring wine over it, insurance replaced it with a new one.

If you want a bulletproof workhorse they are well worth a look, if you are going to use it for work (i.e. mobile) then also look at a 12v - 220/240v inverter up to the job of keeping it charged.
