As for the earmuffs comment, they actually sold something called an ambush hood back in those days, which was basically a balaclava type hood with extra padding on the ears.

Ah, paintball in the olden days....couldn't see **** because you were fogging up, and couldn't hear **** because of the things on your head. Great fun was had by all.
