Photoshop 6.0

Photoshop 6.0 for sure mate. Used for some college design work and good a damn good mark out of it!

You can get some really good colour, font and fade effects. Plus it allows you to layer all your images so you don't need to worry about deleting too much of a picture!! Not free though!

Try paint (Or Pbrush)!!!!!!! Basic but you can do what you want with a little imagination!

Hang on what do you mean by banners if you mean signature banners anything is cool for ir really just some applications help you out and make it easier for you to perform certain functions.
If your talking about making proper banners for use at events you will need a program that will save in vector format as this retains all the information for when thwe image gets enlarged at the printers.

If you want something cheap and cheerful then PaintShop Pro - it's easy to use and has a wide range of filters and effects - it also comes with an animation applet which I used to create the spinning Redskins Paintball on the site and as the avatar.

You can create some equally good designs in MS Publisher, which comes with the Office suite - so if you've got MS Office you really don't need anything else.

If you want to create something for web use something like Adobe Image Ready is probably one of the easiest to use, although any high-end market software will give you the opportunity to do stuff.. Even Serif does a range of software that is getting better and better each year and that's not too pricey..

photoshop 6-7 is prollie the best...
but if you want to design web banners ect...
you can use a program called 'xara 3d'
you can create 3d/animated banners for websites
you can get it off cover disks
