PTFE tape can break up into small stringy bits which can easily contaminate you reg seat giving a spike (which can be dangerous on a HP system)

but I have used it before without incident - it's more about how carefuly you put it on.

I use liquid PTFE now though.

Personally I just find a tape messier, uglier, and harder to use correctly. I'm using this blue liquid called threadlock and it's clean clean clean. Cures in minutes and I've already changed enough fittings that had it to know that it *all* comes off the threads easily. And of course not a leak. (Home Depot retails $2.50 - shop smart, shop S-mart!)

How do you get it off? and does anyone know who stocks it in the UK?

Well the stuff is liquid when you put it on but within 15 mins (usually even less) it turns into a soft plastic-like material. I've never had anything leak and it only takes a little extra force to get off. When you unscrew it the plastic flakes and most falls off; a quick pass with an old toothbrush and then a wire pick and the threads are shinin'. Don't know specifically who would have it in the UK but any DIY store should; usually in the plumbing section.

The best places to look for it in the UK would be Model Shops that do radio control models it is used on the wheel bolts and other parts to stop them coming off with vibration.

Make sure which ever one you get its medium strength as loctite do some threadlock's which are high strength and permanent.

Halfords also do their own brand threadlock for a couple of quid have never used so not to sure how good it is but it is removable.
