My mate bought an ion yesterday, and one of the guys who works down the local site was playing with one, the thing rips. For Just under £200 you get the gun, basically it will run good out the box, and you really are getting alot of gun for the money.
Brand new id look at an Ion, as a starter gun, and it will hold its own against top end markers. And is fully upgradeable, for the price of the next gun up you can get it running on air, with a barrel kit, new feedneck and hopper (at least a Revvy), and warranty and service that goes with new purchases.
Second hand, well look around here, there are some great deals, let people know how much you are willing to spend, and you can get advice accordingly.
Id stay away from the spyders now, so many people started on them and upgraded not long (couple of months) down the line. And with the ION new and great second hand deals about, its never been a better time to get into paintball
