John Sosta Interview on his new Formula 5 Format

Had a chat with Stumpy (Sosta) yesterday.

He's having a new score board developed, from scratch, and I must tell you... some of his ideas are awesome...!!!!

He's proposing that arm bands will be replaced with electronic tags attached to each player to monitor eliminations, game time, positions and so on.

Think that may bit another year down the line but it does sound quite cool.

Also, for those that didn't know, 2 more dates added to the calendar.

He also told me that the next event is full (10 teams), with 4 teams on the waiting list.......

I like the idea of tags (from a reffing point of view) - but some sort of 'colours' are still needed to make identification from the stands easier (especially if looking through netting).

Most teams with any kind of organisation playing at this type of event will already be wearing team colours (Jerseys).

Even if they're not, you'll be able to see which way they are firing, which pretty much gives the game away....

Although occasionally one of our guys has been running back and my brain says "MUGGER" even though Ive played with him for years and he is wearing our top lol!

But I think thats just me hehe, I swear my eyes work on movement

The electronic tag sounds really good. Will free up 2 refs anyhow.

The trouble with playing tops is that they are not nearly colourful enough these days. Nearly all teams I've seen playing events (of any sorts) have a mixed bag of jerseys anyway (no pun intended). Especially if they have 'guests'.

A nice bright coloured vest, like they use in schools, would aid in making this more of a spectator sport. Every other 'sport' seems to have adopted this idea - even cricket!

Well - sort of. It's just an easy way for spectators to identify with a team. Nearly every event I've ever been to (playing or spectating) the players always seem to have different jerseys on than everyone else on their team (with a few exceptions).

Maybe less elaborate jerseys are the answer? All this digi-camo-distortion-bollox is just not spectator friendly at all.

What about larger arm bands (no - not the swimming variety) in high vis colours?

I'm just trying to see this from the spectators point of view - which is usually through green netting. Make the players easier to see from the sides. The 'vest' was just an idea.

Thing is, i dont think spectators (Joe Public) are going to watch any kind of paintball event sadly. And ballers can tell whats going on pretty easy I would have thought.

And that's the bit that HAS to change if paintball is to survive in the UK. Look what happened when a simple game like dodge-ball became spectator friendly!

I always say that there is no need to sell paintball to paintballers - it has to be sold to non-paintballers. That's the only way to go forward (sadly).

paintball has survived for what 25+yrs without mainstream tv coverage, why is it suddenly going to fall apart?
