i agree with jasper, granted im not in the big big paintball scene as of yet but am gonna start doing more tournies etc, because it is a buzz of shootin someone, round my area this hobby/sport is growing by the day, alot of my friends laugh cause i spend alot of money on it, but i dared them to come to see why and they came(granted it was rec-ball) and they shot and they spent loads of money and for the whole day they smiled and laughed all day and have now took up the sport/hobby, there are just some things people love to do such as us lot we all like paintball so thats why we follow it.

you could say why do we love following the sport well like someone previously mentioned, why do people like bird watchin, or train spotting, ITS BECAUSE THEY ENJOY IT!

on the point of cost to some people its an issue yes but to others it aint im in debt but i always make sure i have more than enough money to go at least 2 times a month. because its a great sport and has a great atmosphere. some people take it to far as to say they the worlds greatest and when they get shot by someone not so good, such as a noob, they get stressed and sling insults them people need to step back and see its fun not the war in iraq!!!!

You say you cant see how the sport has been growing quickly and how it should be bigger than american football in this case but think of how its changed from woods to supair, pumps an splats to electros an ramping, these and many other things are major changes and almost like the sport starting again so really since ramping has been here for 1 maybe 2 years so if thats the way forward then thats how old the current sport is.

untill a format standard is set an kept bar very slight minor changes you cant really count how old the current sport is.

Football(soccer) is classed as not much over 120 yrs old yet it has been played for hundreds of years well before that but the current format has only been around that long and that is what gets counted, yes slight changes are made like the offside rule or how many substitutes but the main format stays the same.

So paintball has been growing quickly its just there are so many formats that its hard to see and the counter for how long it has been around keeps getting reset.

I have the same beef about yachting. It is so expensive, and really, the age of sail is, like, so over. We have internal combustion engines now. Why learn to reef and tack? Plus, if you are worried about not being able to afford drinks from your paintball habit, wait 'til you start selling little kids to white slavers to help pay for a new transom or marina fees. That's when you have found an expensive hobby.

Plus, like, no one outside of the boat even cares. People are shooting along on their jet skis, paragliding, and here I am avoiding shoals and swamping on the lee, fer chrissake?

It is for fun. Don't do things for fun you can't afford. Don't put fun above things that matter to you more in the long run. If you are one of the very few who are talented and connected enough that you think you might be able to make a career or at least lifestyle of it, then go nuts. Otherwise, keep your involvement in scale with your life and enjoy. Duh.

i agree in some ways with what gyro said but the quote "Don't put fun above things that matter to you more in the long run" maybe that came out wrong, alot of people have very stressful jobs and fun helps take that stress away. if i didnt go paintballing as a sport and a stress relief because its fun, id probaly go a lil doo lally

When I say "things that matter to you more in the long run" I am talking about kids, career (assuming you didn't get tricked into one you hate), financial well being, education, etc. I wasn't talking about aspects of life that might wish to escape from, I was talking about things attached to more meaningful rewards or more delayed gratification.

I think that if a stressful job is the problem, paintball is not the solution- a new job or yoga might be in order. First thing to attend to in life is getting the money without hating life. Next thing is to find things you like. Next is to find people to share it with. Next is to crush your enemies and erase their seed from the earth. Easy.

pesonally i love to play paintball, its the biggest adrenaline rush you will ever get (well i think), but i agree the fact it is too expensive but other sports/hobbies are expensive as liz pointed out being only a kid its hard enough toget your parents to take you to a torney yet alone make up for your short fall in cash.

i've only being playing paintball a year i havent had the time to see it grow as other people have said. Personally i would like to think there is a future for paintball but unless there is alot more financhial backing from companies or paint gets alot cheaper it is not going to happen, the only way i could see my self playing after i have children pressuming the sport will still be around is sell them or win the lottery.

It is by no means taken too seriously.

If paint was made any cheaper Stuart, those same companies who you say should drop their prices, would all be going out of business.
You can now pick up paint for something stupid like 15 quid a box which when I started playing we were paying the equivalent of 300 quid a box, yeh you heard right, I was paying 15p per ball.
Granted we weren't shooting the same amount of paint as palyers do now but hey, you ain't gonna get paint much cheaper than it is now, in fact, the price needs to go up not down if we are to stimulate the market place over here in terms of industry investment.

do you think people who take part in motorsport complain about their sport being too expensive? or horse riding or sailing or the multitude of other expensive sports/hobbies?

or maybe they just accept that it's their choice to partake and have to sacrifice other aspects of their life in order to afford to compete?
