The PSP isn't really the ruling body here anymore. The NPPL split from them for all the reasons stated, they were putting on sub-par tournaments, and not promoting a positive image in the public eye. In the 2003 season for the "super7" series, many changes are to occur that could propel paintball right out of the closet and onto TV right in front of the public's faces. If the NPPL actually does what they say they're going to do, you might just be able to ask people a year from now if they've heard of the NPPL, and the majority will.
