Why wouldn't increased popularity bring prices down? it's already happened over here....... it only took one retailer to take a bit of a stand last year and suddenly I'm paying £50 for a proteus from pretty much anywhere. More mainstream, more players, once we stop being a closed shop the prices will come down, they have to...... all it takes is one manufacturer to say..... well, lets sell 1000 of our new markers at £500 instead of 500 at £1000 and bang, everyone has to follow suit. Anyway, the big problem is paint.... I've ran into a few rec-ballers recently who have done a bit of research and know "how much paint really costs". I know about the overheads/seasonality/insurance costs, but most punters aren't going to see that.
The main thing stopping us going "mainstream" is cost..... players come for a rec-day, love it and wish they could come regularly, but they can't afford it and never find out about the tourney side of things. To most ,paintball is a birthday/stag party or treat organised by work. It's once or twice a year at most. Out of the 140 or so at your local site this weekend, how many are aware of tourney ball? rec ball is the bread and butter of paintball..... for every group of players that find out about "tourney, walk ons and tem practice" you lose paying customers.
Promote the sport, cut into profit (until you've introduced enough bodies to make recball affordable as a regular hobby).
