I have a PMR and they are great little things. Light, great modes on the board, excellent bolt design, great build, very easy to maintain and there already so great from the start the only upgrades you will ever need are really a new barrel and a new trigger (which are not essential).

They can keep up with todays high end markers nicely.

Go for the PMR!

Buy the Pmr

All the modes you'll need for any league, build quality is awesome- and there is no immediete need (or any) to upgrade or replace rubbish parts.

screw in air, slap on hopper and go blast fools.

Why own a marker that cost as much to get it to work as it did to buy in the first place?

Plus you have fantastic support from Dye and all their authorised service monkeys.

Slothball.com offer fantastic service- but jamie isn't really ape like.

i own a mini and havent shot it yet (waiting for someone to send me my air bottle) but its small and light and cant wait to let it rip. like people have said tho i dont think a mini is a starter marker. its priced like one but a pmr would be ur best bet. 2nd hand egos are awesome if you find the right one.

Personally out of a mini and an ion for your friend I would say ion aswell. Just because apparently a few people have bought mini's because they're 'so small' and they are. But the size it's not for everyone because I can imagine it's a bit weird at first. I've never tried one just speaking from my ideas but I can imagine them being a bit back heavy. For the money you pay I advise the ion due to the fact that he knows he can handle it ok. Save the money for a better gun once he knows he will like it. (eg: tested someone elses) otherwise he risks hating it and loosing a lot of money on it selling it because if you buy new the second hand market looses you quite a chunk of change if you barely use it!!!

Just my opinion.

well to be honest i have a ion and when i first was into paintball that was my first gun so i didnt really know much about it then i started needing things like qlok and a new barrel then a new trigger so what i am saying is stock is pretty crap but once you have upgrades its fine maybe get a new board but up to you its got what you need the stock one allready its comes to about £250 or more in the end my mate has a pmr PROTO hes marker is really cool its sweet with an ul barrel on it and dont need a new barrel in the first place its great out of the box. Also i wanted a mini but by the sounds of it ion is better go for PMR or get an ION and upgrade it.

Played around with my mini and to be honest if you have the poppet mod done its immense. Last time i used it properly was with a stako and it wasnt back heavy at all. In fact i would go so far as to say for now i wouldn't shoot anything else.
