Cocker v Ion

I hear what everyone is saying about this - Im just an amateur n00b, but here goes with my opinion.

ION - Everyone i know who has bought an Ion has had a problem with it straight away, mainly due to the cheap build of them and the speed they churn them out of the factory due to massive demand - I bought my son one and he was chuffed, however after its first use (in the garden firing about 200 balls) it started leaking air!

And the quality of milling was poor (still threads of metal in all threads which needed to be cleaned out before using!) but, it is a cracking marker and a hell of a lot of fun for a good price - and the saying in trade cirlces apparently goes that if you dont have a breakdown with an Ion in the first month, youve done well and you will have a cracking marker for a long time. These are a really impressive marker for the price and very quick out of the box.

AUTOCOCKER - I bought one of these for myself, mainly cos im an old fart who will hover around at the back to avoid doing loads of running ;) and I also wrote an article on it (said gun is for sale by the way ;) very reasonably priced too! (PM me for details!)

I thought it was a cracking marker and built a lot better than the Ion and very accurate. not as quick (obviously!) but able to hold its own with a few tweaks of the trigger. I did find it easier to clean / rebuild than the Ion, but not quite as much fun in using. It also uses a lot less air, although at a tourney thats wont be a problem. I would like the cocker with an Ion feel and fun - for the same price! - then the market would really go tits up!

I think for what your saying, then the cocker cos they CAN be upgraded in the future. If your wanting to do tourneys straight away, then the cocker would be ok, but the Ion would allow you to paint more people a lot quicker and is a whole lot more faster and cheeky!

but anyway, those are my rather insignificant thoughts, hope they help.

Oh - someone also said the Ion isnt a fan of CO2, but thats could well be tittle tattle! so there :p Im sure the more expereinced peeps on here will shoot me down with all of the above ;)

my first "Real" marker was a second hand JT Tetra, and i have to admit, it was really abused. i got a bit ripped off realy..

my second gun is in my sig.. does its job nicely for a starter gun.. although a little heavy..

ive done a lot of research as to what i want for my 3rd gun, as im new too and dont want to buy "more gun than i can handle" with my noob status..

the Ion seems an easy enough gun to look after and from what i can tell, outperforms the trilogy in terms of price Vs performance.

(and theres PLENTY resources on the web for the ion, many on this site in various topics. .)

im in the same boat as you.. maintenence wise, it seems an easyer gun to look after rather than the trilogy autococker..

hopefully some others here can help us with usefull advise

thanx to all that have already posted..

EDIT :- Diablo.. u beat me too it. =D as you have experience with both.. im glad u posted...

funny though, i heard the opposite about air/CO2 i read its not a fan of air..

according to smart parts the ion will run on co2 or air, it may suffer a little freezing up at full chat on co2 but it will run it. Also note as co2 is VERY cold it will dry up orings quicker than a hamster in a tumble dryer so lube often.

also with the ion some of the grub screws in the trigger worked free on mine stopping the marker firing... sorted with a little thread lock but bit of a bugger to fix and a little puzzling at first.

good luck with finding a marker you like.

Ps still have my eclipse impulse for sale pm for details

;)

Ion, the trilogy is just a crap cocker.

Why buy one, to have to just replace every part of it, to bring it to a semi-decent marker later. If you really want a cocker, then have a look on the classifieds and buy a E1 or E2 with nexus internals.

Trilogy base 200 quid, and to upgrade it +200 for a E Frame, 100 fo the internals, Regulator 50, better bolt 30 etc. It's just doesn't make sense.

dont worry about a marker being too good for your noobness, i went through a lot of cack markers before getting an ion and only then did i not feel at a disadvantage. The more you spend on your gun initially the less you'll spend overall becuase you wont need to get a new one for a while after.

ok thanks alot guys, im thinking about the ion now, more seriously, even though i'd have to use it with c02 unless i got a good deal (and then still sometimes c02 + remote line) as not sure about air refills around birmingham area)

i know im a noob and these questions probly piss people off but i really am grateful, thanks again

no noob questions are stupid mate, we all have to learn somewhere. if you struggle for air in birmingham, just buy a dive tank from your local dive shop and get yourself a fill rig.

most dive shops do second hand in test tanks for about 50-60 quid and a fill rig is about 50
