In reference to my previous thread regarding how many paintballer there are in the UK: "Ah well, that's bolloxed that idea up then...."

To explain what I was thinking.....

Imagine a TV series (or channel...) that was purely showing footage and interviews from all the major NPPL and European Millenium events (aswell as the better local leagues, such as the Series 2001, etc), which wasn't geared purely towards getting more people involved in the sport, but rather as a televised magazine version of PGI which is geared mainly towards current players who like to keep up to date with what's going on.

I was thinking that if there are enough paintballers in the UK, it might be possible...but I don't think that a channel would get the go ahead for a show that was only gonna pull in 1000 viewers....

...BUT, what if it had some sort of international license where it could air on a digital channel over here and a digital channel in USA, France, Germany, Sweden, etc....through corporate sponsorship and stuff.....would that generate enough revenue to sustain a show? does an international audience count towards ratings? I don't know the mechanics of TV ratings, or the costs involved, but is it feasible at all??

How many people actually watch that Einstein.tv crap? and the GOD CHANNEL????!!!!! perleeezzzz!!! I think you know where I'm going with this.....

Basically, I JUST WANT SOMETHING DECENT TO WATCH!!!!!!!! and I reckon if someone gave it a go and wasn't too cheesy about it all (Cue Mission Paintball and Xfire! (no offense to the guys who took part, you lot rocked!!)...), it would even attract more people to the shiny new image that is modern tournament paintball....

****, somebody should employ me!!!

Your turn...

OK, here's my take on this whole TV debate

Most TV channels want programs that pull in the viewers, not something that appeals to smaller audiences. From that outset Paintball is
going to have a hard time getting anywhere as it stands, the public and media mis-conceptions about our sport will sour most people's
ideas. X-fire and Mission: Paintball may not have been a great piece of viewing to many people who play ball, but they did at least bring
paintball to the general masses, and showed it in a much better light than it usually gets seen in.

Rather than sitting on message boards complaining about what is being shown on TV and how much you hate it and how much better
you could have done, try making something better. Get a bunch of video cameras, get along to the next tourney, get as many decent bits
of footage as you can. Not just the glammy bits, but complete games. Edit it all together with a decent voice over / presenter (From
someone who knows the sport very well) then go hawking it around every independent TV company you can think of. Just do a single
program or a couple of them.

Keep in mind that it needs to appeal to everyone, not just the die-hard ballers. If you stick with it it might work, it might not.

Well,

I dont have a decent video camera any more (doesnt work to well after it caught fire) but I do have access to some pretty high end editing gear.

their are a lot of people who attend tournys, probably a fair few of them have camera's. If a group of people could get together, organise the filming of a tourny I'm sure that a tape could be done.

Then all that'd be needed is a smooth talking person with charisma by the bucket load to go and sell the idea to some TV companys... Oh, and a truck load of luck to.

didnt mean to slap ya hands tho..

James.

I agree with this partially.
TV companies want shows that make MONEY. Granted, this usually means the shows that draw big audiences, because these are the shows that draw sponsors. However, if a company were to say:"Here mister TV channel type person, have a bucket o' cash and broadcast this show about grass that's growing", then some company IS going to broadcast images of grass that is growing. Yes, you do limit your audience by making a paintball specific program, but should you find some company mad enough to invest in it, it could work. Chances are you won't find this company though, because I doubt that sponsoring a TV show that only draws paintballers as a viewing crowd will make a significant contribution to their sales.

In short order: Yes, it can be done, but it's highly unlikely. Sorry.

Hmm.. Thinking about it you'd probably want to stage all the games.. Atleast for the show(s) your trying to sell to TV companys, easyer to make it more exiting & action packed. Plus you'd get all the shots and framing the way you wanted it..

I'd be well up for doing something like this (Might even be able to drop it into the laps of a few people to) if anyone can help me with footage or voiceovers.. Or anything for that matter.
