i remember someone telling me it started with lumberjacks wanting an easy way to paint trees so they used some pressurised canisters or something to shoot small paint filled thingys at trees. or was someone telling me porkys?

No that's true (marking which trees to cut down), then they tried shooting cows, then they shot each other

There is a story about it, I think it was that people needed to mark trees with paint, however to make it easier, paint balls where made, by the company nelson. The first paintballs were staining and eventually people started to shoot each other with it, so a non staining version was made. I am quite sure I read this on the nelson website or some other paintball website, and Im sure i will be corrected if wrong. I think that is the jist of it
