Think you lot are f'ing bonkers. Marshalling must be the worst job on the planet. crap money, crap hours, abuse from the players and punters, outside in the cold, outside in the wet, outside in the summer, stinging nettles, poison ivy, getting extra loving, stag parties, rambo wannabes to name but a few.

I appreciate marshalling does subsidise your playing, but that's some crazy sacrifice! You lot are sadist's.

Now office work, that's where it's at. Free phone, long liquid lunches, free client entertainment, get to play paintball in the States 3 times a year (with my homies in NYC), great ho's and all day P8ntballer.com. Can't be missed.

However when it's all said and done, Mr Tounament Marshall, with your extra welts and at times over zealous refereeing, your inside out Dye top and towel round your head......This bud's for you.;)

I agree with one thing that Strongl Said, the money is crap (where i marshall anyway) but the benefits beat that, you learn alot fomr punters, what to do, and what not to do during game situations, and its a laugh watching em go, OWWW!!

apart from that, i love the sport, so thats another bonus, doing somthing i like!

Its also a good laugh to give them a helping point in the right direction, just a single "Come on greens move up" and show some great movement or sometimes not so great :)

The pay might not be great, but I enjoy working as a marshal and its always nice to make sure ppl go home happy after a days play :)

Rec marshalling is a lot different from tournament marshalling. Rec is a lot more fun, particularly working with the newbies/punters who've never played before. Sometimes you get bad groups but usually they're pretty fun. Not as much fun as playing but it makes playing a LOT cheaper.

Tournament marshalling is a whole different ballgame (no pun intended). There aren't many teams that play the national circuit around me, so marshalling lets me travel to all the events (for free! :D ). I also find that I get a certain rush out of it. Not as much as playing to be sure, but when you're reffing the finals in front of a big crowd, people are cheering and players are making moves.... yeah, it's worth the welts, sunburn and exhaustion :D :D :D

Sunburn - SUNBURN!!!!!!! Try reffing at Elsham in January, more like frostbite. It's been known to snow in AUGUST up near S****horpe, usually on paintballers.
I was dragged out of rec ball marshalling retirement a couple of weeks ago when someone was let down at the last moment, & I'm still regretting it. Stand near the players - get shot. Stand many yards away from the players, and not in line with any of them - get shot even more. Go off past the sidelines to talk to one of the eliminated players - get shot again. And none of them were intentionally shooting the refs, they just can't shoot straight. Then you get them coming back looking sheepish, & it turns out that they've fallen over & stuck 4 inches of dirt up their barrel.
The place I worked at is very nice to their marshals, with decent pay, plenty of good food & well looked after but I really couldn't stand doing it regularly any more!
