What's a Military Family Worth?
by Rush Limbaugh, March 11, 2002

I think the vast differences in compensation between the victims of the September 11th casualty, and those who die serving the country in uniform, are profound. No one is really talking about it either because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11th. Well, I just can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September 11th attack, you're going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million. If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable. Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt. Keep in mind that some of the people that are getting an average of $1.185 million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it's not enough. We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the
Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11th families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation as well. You see where this is going, don't you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over fifty years of entitlement politics in this country. It's just
really sad. "Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime."-Adlai E. Stevenson, Jr. Every time when a pay raise comes up for the military they usually receive next to nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live in low rent housing. However our own U.S. Congress just voted themselves a raise, and many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one-time to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month and most are now equal to be millionaires plus. They also do not receive Social Security on retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7 you may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed you in harms way receive a pension of $15,000 per month. I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now fighting. "When do we finally do something about this ??" If this doesn't seem fair
to you, it is time to forward this to as many people as you can.

Isn't just enough to make you sick? People who spend time defending our country get jack $hit and these victims and victim survivors are getting BANK! I know I know it's going to get deleted!

I agee that payments to the family of a serving military are poor, and that payments to victims of these atrcities are out of proportion.
On the other hand, you and others in the military chose the life, knowing full well what you were letting yourself in for. The victims of terrorist attacks had no choice in the matter.

What, Rush Limbaugh saying something that offends? Surely not!!

Anyone else hear Bill Hick's "dark little poetry" about Rush on Rant in E Minor??

Yes he has a valid point about compensation to families of service men and women killed in the line of duty. But - d'you really think he cares? Honestly? Since when does any politician have any interest in an issue except the political mileage it will afford them against their opposition?

Case in point would be the UK Defence Minister (Conservative) stonewalling about Gulf War syndrome to the veterans. Some were so outraged about how they were treated they handed back their medals. Then when the Tories got booted out of office and Labour took over, who was jumping on the parapets demanding "and end to the cover up about Gulf War syndrome"? Yep - "Fatty" Soames again.

Makes me sick.

I agree it sucks. No financial payout can compensate for the loss of a loved one, but the idea is that at least the dependants won't be worse off. Payouts in the millions are excessive however. Then you look at what the military get! I know that they should have understood the risks when they signed up but they also have a right to expect their families are looked after if they die in the service of their country. Military pay isn't brilliant either, again based on the assumption that the military is your "family" & will look after you.
But in this country now it seems that people who join the emergency services can get compensation for the stress of doing their job in some circumstances. I keep reading about e.g. ambulance paramedics or policemen claiming massive payouts for attending very bad accidents because of the massive psychological damage this has caused them. Erm..... if they can't cope with that kind of trauma, why did they join in the first place? At the same time, policemen crippled in the line of duty may or may not get decent compensation - can't work out the pattern behind who gets payouts & who doesn't, I think its totally random!

I think these payments are either due to the following reasons......

1/The loss of productivity is a lot due to many people who were killed earning a lot of cash and that the money is for lost benefit.

2/The US government was extremely moved by this (outrage, whimpering etc.....) and due to this they wanted to make an example of this due to its sheer size.
They want to show the world that they care about their people and by showing this they throw out massive amounts of cash.

The families of the military guys will receive less because the soldiers dont actually create vast amounts of money like those trade people, so unfortunately they are valued as less individulals in the economy and to the people who control the payouts, they have not earned it (which is sick)

Apparently trade people have got a bigger net worth than a soldier so the families will get more (deserved according to the economy)

Soldiers deserve a bigger wage, they have families as well, all humans should, no matter what their race should have a fair paymnet.
A soldiers job is classified as a high-risk business, but dont people in this business earn more thatn a lot others?

Im not surprised if military numbers are dwindling, who wants to support their families off a low income?

Life is hard but this is a part of life we can make easier.

The politicians deserve a good kick up the ass several times to make this point clear.
Politicians are like leeches, they latch onto things that are good for them and never let go then they swell with greed as they get paid more from it.

they should put a couple of those politicians in a tank and run em thru iraq etc whilst the enemy is still active.
Maybe hands on experience of a military operation is what these people need to see the real picture

I ain't a big fan of politicians, but that last bit was stupid. Some of them have more been through more stuff than you and I can imagine. Colin Powell, George Bush (the original one, not the retard copy that's in office now) are both individuals that have seen plenty of warfare up close.

Yep, our system is screwed up. Nope, it's not the politician's fault. It's ours. We put them there. I do a job that could cost me my life, and I do it because I don't trust anyone else to do it. I pay insurance to make sure my family is taken care of. If you don't and you are killed, why is that my problem. Our government is putting out all this money for victim compensation but why are they doing it? The agg assault victim I dealt with last night is not going to be compensated for the random act of violence that cost him his eye, so what makes the people from Sept. 11 so special? Policy should be made with rational thought, not misplaced sentiment. As soon as we start electing people who can think and act without pandering to the emotion of the moment, we'll be a lot better off.

I aint touching this one with a 20 foot Bolivian barge pole, save to say that I am of the opinion that you know perfectly well what you are getting yourself into when you sign up for the military.

Actually, I will say my piece....

Imagine a HUGE war, a country would go bankrupt pretty quickly just on the insurance payouts alone!! OK, this may seem kinda insensitive, but where do you draw the line?

Fair enough, the payouts for September 11 are a bit extreme. Ultimately, shouldn't it be up to the criminals, or rather the country who harbours (still) the criminals, to pay out any compensation?

Also, am I right in understanding that these payouts mainly come from charities?? My other half (Tracy) is currently reading Madonnas latest Biography and it mentions that Madonna actually donated $1Billion to a charity to help ease the suffering of the families affected by September 11.

Ok.... NEXT!
