I'm 6'5" and have played up front when I was younger and faster but now start at the back and then am the second line of attack. At practices I still play forwards for fun and to keep my skills up. Playing front is different to playing back.

At 6'5" I can still play up front and get in the oppositions faces but It's harder to get there off the break as you are a bigger target to hit when there is all that paint in the air at the start of the game. I just get there after the game has started :)

But it is possible. The Ugly Ducklings manage it and most of them are hhhyaaawwwwge (HUGE!).

One of our point guys is about as tall as I am (6'2"), but he's as fast as hell! This is how his breakout goes:
(marshall) "G............."
Woooosh (point guy hits the 50)
(marshall) ".........ame on!"
Also he has the ability to somehow fold himself into a ball about 2 inches in diameter.
So yeah, if you got the skills, you can play front.

I'm not the fastest guy on my team but I'm a close second. But this last summer I hurt my back and had trouble folding myself into some of the smaller bunkers up front, so it limmited me quite a bit. I just asked because the other front man on my team is allllmost 5 foot 4 and I see most of the other front men (and women) are all in the same height range (nipple height).

I needed to know that there are more freaks like me out there.

I've found my hight to be quite useful up front, but because I'm a bigger target, I have to choose my running lane a little more carfully that most of the circus midgits that play up front need to.

Hight can be a big advantage if you have to jump over a bunker to do some one. I'm able to get up and over bunkers that the vertically chalanged don't have a chance in hell to make it over.

Now here's something I've been wondering: can a circus midgit play in the back? or do yo NEED a tall guy (not nessicarlly a fat one)it seems to me if we put someone with Shaq's height in the back field he would have a great advantage in raining paint down on the other teams bunker monkeys. He would be that much higher, so he would be able to see that much more, and his paint would start that much higher so it would go farther. but a little 5foot nothing guy wouldn't be able to see as much or shoot as far or have the downwords angle on the tiny laydowns on the hyperball field ... etc.

One advantage I have from playing back is that I can shoot OVER stand up coke cans :)

I can put lines of paint from places people are not expecting. It's great when someone is waiting out on me... I just snap over the top of the stand up can with a little jump :)

Some of us "Circus Midgets" can jump too. I'm 5'8" and I used to be able to dunk a volleyball. Bad knees and lack of training pretty much prevent that now but I suppose I could do it again if I wanted to.

I play back & always have done & I'm only 5'2". Yes, there have been times when I wished I was a bit taller but I'm good at my job & in the old days I was the shortest person on my team. Height can help at the back (& lack of height help at the front) but there are many other factors that are just as important if not more so.

Of course, as the widest & slowest person on that team back was the natural position for me anyway ;)

As for the original question "does size really matter?", only when you're talking about extremes. It's more what you do with it that how big it is! :D :D :D
