In a National "Girls" Magazine called 19 In the UK a vile a horrid article has been printed bringing down what we as paintballers is all about.

It reads like this

" In an article called "Its a Bloke thing" (The artical was written by DR Ron Bracey)

PAINTBALLING.

Whats the story?

You might think blokes dressing up in combats, charging round woods and pretending to kill people is just a bit of harmless, playground-style fun. But, sadly, most men take it far too seriously. Tales of blokes coating themselves in camouflage paint, unloading multiple rounds of orange paint at someone's bum while screaming 'Die, you *******' are not uncommon.

Why do they do it?

"Paintballing is realising the typical male fantasy of, 'If only I was in the wild west armed with a pistol and not a forest armed with Dulux'," says Bracey. "This is typical for men raised on a diet of war and cowboy films, but too cowardly to ever really get involved with either."

Worth Getting into?

It's a good way of letting off steam, but the novelty soon wears off when you find yourself cowering under a bush in a bid to not get shot by some crazed wannabe SAS marksman."

I am not going to stand for this so if you agree with me copy and paste the next bit into you email and send an email to complain and educate the people at 19. The more people who do it the greater chance we have of changing opinions.

Dear 19,

After reading your article about Paintball, I would like to make a complaint.

While showing a small part and narrow minded view of what paintball is all about I believe that you have not given or even tried paintball.

While 90% of paintball is played in the woods, and yes camoflage clothes are worn (1 to protect your own clothes, 2) you might stand out like a sore thumb) it is not as rambo as it is made out to be. Thousands of people play paintball in the UK each year and it is one of the fastest growing sports in europe. It is not just played by men, a whole range of ages play and also women.

Contrary to popular beleif paintballers don't want to be cowboys, or SAS marksmen (but its true some Paintballers serve in the forces) we want to be paintballers.

In your article it states "This is for men raised on a diet of war and cowboy films, but are too cowardly to do either."

But as already stated many paintballers serve in the forces and are doing both.

Paintball today has also left the woods and is now played in stadiums in tournaments by teams who train hard to compete agains each other.

The format is very different to the crawling through bushes and trees and is played on a "sup'air" field. This is fast paced and fun to watch.

this Is a few pictures of what tournament paintball is about, there are MANY more.

I would like to see a better review of our sport and not just a small minded bigoted view from someone who has probably never even played.

Yours Sincerely

Done!!

Well mine has been sent, will post up any response.
Articles like this get my goat, Big Issue did one about 3 years ago that was uneductated and factually wrong. After a couple of emails I found out that the writer had never played paintball!!
I hate to see our sport trashed by these fools.

Yo, I jumped the bandwagon and sent the letter aswell. Any response will be pasted up here of course.

I did it primarily for those poor colleagues of mine who always feel the need to jokingly compare street crime to paintball. "Hey there was a shoot out last night in that pub. You and your buddies involved? Eh? Eh? Hehehe."

Then the vein starts throbbing up here. Grrrr.

My girlfriend is wonderful but thinks i wanna be a rambo paintballer. NOT TRUE. She supports me through my playing and eveything but i dont think she always agrees with it.

She has never even played and refuses to. She was reading 19 and found the article it pi$$ed me off, so here we are.

Sent my e-mail just now.

If it's one thing that annoys me it's people who write about things they know nothing about.
Even if they have tried it and that's what they experienced (it could happen, if they happened to go to a site at the same time as the TA!), they should still do a little more research, and produce a well informed article.

Did this piss me off or what! Why do people do this? It makes them look idiotic to say the least:(

I ahve written an email as well, and with yur leave tom tom, used yours as inspiration, fine piece of writing it was too, but I had a few more points to make. If they were a good magazine dedicated to thier reader base they would show that this is a topic that bears debate, and that there are truths they have kept from their readers who are now finding out.....:D

haha. Read on....

Dear 19,

After reading your article about Paintball, I am putting forward a complaint. ( I needed to start somewhere!)

The small cross section of the sport you detailed and the narrow mindedness of the article, leads me to think that you have not even tried the sport, or still have your head in the sand.

While 90% of paintball is played in the woods, and people do wear camouflage clothing, they are to protect your own clothes and help you enjoy another apsect of woodland paintball, the thrill of doing something undetected - it is not as "Rambo" as it is made out to be. Thousands of people play paintball in the UK each year and it is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe. It is not just played by men, a whole range of ages play and female participation is growing. Organisations around the world play paintball on a regular basis as team building and de-stressing excercises. Big organisations like Autonomy, Oracle, BT, Microsoft, Boots (yes!) etc.

In your article it states "This is for men raised on a diet of war and cowboy films, but are too cowardly to do either." Well, after I picked my jaw up off the floor I just had to point out that this statement coming from a publication that targets the mid to late teens cross section of the female population DRIPS with feminism. What a ridiculously broad ranging, stereotypical statement that is has no factual evidence to lend it any grounds.
You also seem to ignore the newer and more spectator friendly formats for the sport like "Speedball" or "sup'airball". These games are played by players wearing bright team trim, with their sponsors and team names proudly emblazoned across their backs. Games have been held in Crystal Palace, the Sky Dome in Canada, Toulouse in France etc. There are two world circuits for teams to compete in, the list goes on. Feeling silly yet?

I would like to see a better review of our sport - because that is what it is today, backed by multi-million pound organisations who make the kit, markers and paintballs to exacting and sometimes aerospace standards so that it is amongst the safest in the world. I would hope your readers are reading your magazine to inform themselves, and gain insights into aspects of life within their age group. This sport and it's players within that age group are both male and female and have suddenley had to change their opinion of your magazine.

Yours Sincerely
