What Jon C says will work just install windows over the top of itself and it will work but you may have a few issues later on.

Do that first then back all you stuff up format the drive and start again from a clean install.

There is probs a million and 1 ways of fixing it however to do this someone who knows how to would have to be looking at the laptop. So best bet is what is said above.

Windows (any version) is a horrible OS anyways. When you fancy a play around or are bored google linux and have a bash at it. I would recommend Ubuntu if your a normal everyday windows user of course everything is free so cant hurt to give it a try :D

OK guys, I am now running Windows 7, which, on Bon's advice, seems to have remedied my little problem ...
Many thanks to everybody who responded in any way, it is much appreciated.

Good point well made.

Unless your using your computer for gaming, Ubuntu is the best OS out right now.

Everything just works, and its so simple my old mum can use it.
Its great for a laptop because its not demanding on resources.
Plus its free.

Edit: Glad to hear your back with us Pete.
