Halflife 2/steam . . . help

Anyone else who has halflife 2 should agree with me on how much a pain in the arse steam are.

Last summer i got a copy of HL2 and after much swearing at the computer finaly got it installed. After a few weeks my computer needed an new Harddrive so got it replaced and tried to play HL2 again but ofcourse steam would not have any of this. So HL" got shelved until this fine evening. Had a fiddle around and managed to find my steam passward, reinstall the game and (drum roll) am unable to play because i need to buy the game? I can play Project Freeman and download my own free copy of HL2 but to play the full game its asking me to pay $29.99, the words rhyme with clucking bell.

Anyone had this problem or know a way to resolve it without me having to pay (again) for the privilage?

Ah so you bought HL2 online, thats a pain. You should be able to install steam, log onto your account and then it will have a list of availible games, you can then redownload them and play, thats if you've kept the cd key of course

So what are you doing, your trying to make anther steam account using a cd key that you've previously used?

If so, just log inot the account you had before you did something with your HD

i haven't made a new account i'm using my old one but it won't take the CD key.

when i click on "play half life 2" when the game has just loaded up it takes me to my steam account.

In the My Games section is says under status for HL2 "pre-load compleate" when i click on it, it takes me to the store section of Steam

any idea mate?

So you've downloaded half life 2 and when you go to play it, you have to enter your cd key and when you do it goes all pear shaped and takes you to the store?

well, it doesnt sound right if it says PRE-load complete, i've neevr had that and ive uninstalled/reinstalled steam loads of times.

Argh steam is a right pain in the arse, why couldnt the keep good old cs 1.5

Damn straight.

i didn't down load HL i installed it off the disc (not a copy/fake) as i did before, once installed wanted me to enter my steam details, which i did. Not i'm at a loose end. Tried to activate product by entering my CD key but it said the CD key is already in use.

When i right click on HL2 in "My games" the first option in the menu is purchas game. I don't know why?
