Best way to explain it could be this: the more you mess about with the intricate parts of a marker, the more chance there is of breaking something. So only do what is necessary!
So for example if you've been out and played a normal days paintball then a swab through the barrel and a quick wipe of the eyes will be fine.
If you've had a long weekend with numerous chops then maybe its a good idea to get the bolt system out and give that a good clean to make sure no paint has backed up and could be causing problems.
and if you've had the paintball event from hell and your marker ended up buried in mud/dropped in a puddle/shot in the trigger then you will want to strip the marker down and give everything a good clean out from top to bottom!
