Loctite won't cause cracks,
overtightening or using something other than loctite will cause cracks.
Go with Loctite 242 as lovetone says, i use it on everything, it's only got a light sticking action but when used on a tapered thread like a gauge, it seals nicely and you can get the gauge off again if needed.
Just read what you said earlier, you say you have a leak near the gauge, put the bottle into a bowl of water and check where the leak is from, because if like i mine, your gauge is leaking through that small vent hole, then you'll need a new gauge anyway.

and i think it is leaking through that vent
hole, so is all i need a new guage? or is the air being vented out of that hole because of another problem....

Perfectly ok to submerge in water, just towel it off afterwards.
Take it out it's bottle cover tho:D
For some reason ocasionally something goes inside the gauges and they leak, replaced my gauge and it's been fine for a year now?
