I don't believe in the Christian deity. I don't believe in any Deities, as I perceive them as humanities answer for parental figures. And Im opposed to organised religion on the grounds that no one should tell you what to think or believe in, so long as you respect others right to their belief's and don't try to harass or oppress them because of their belief's as seems to be the case with most of the major religions at the moment.
Nicely put miss echo:cool:

If anyone asks i class myself as Atheist as i don't believe in the standard 2.4 god as laid down by most religions. I do believe in something but my beliefs are more spiritual than religious, and as I'm still a little unsure as to what i believe it's hard to lay down into words.

I do tho believe in angels but not in the context or image that is laid out in a Philadelphia advert, but more along the lines of ghosts or spirits, and they are not all saintly good either, and none of mine play the bloody harp.

The problem i have with religion comes under 2 points:
1=Chinese Whispers:confused:
The "WHOLE" of most modern religions are based on a bible, this was in turn based on a previous edition, which was based on a previous edition, which was based on a previous edition, which was based on a previous edition, which was based on a previous scripture, which was based on a previous carving, which was based on a story passed to a wise man, which was told to him by a traveler, who collected the story from the son of a father who met a bloke in the street, who new a man that swears he was there when some bloke allegedly walked on water after a party......so yeah of course it's a factual documentation, and i believe it entirely.:confused:
2=crusades, warfare, etc etc
How does "ANY" religion tolerate the death and destruction caused by religious differences:eek:
3=God is testing you
I've had so much $hite in my life, and where was god for me then? Did he help me thru it? feck no....my family and friends......that's what got me thru:(

Guess i'm gonna burn in hell now:rolleyes:

As everyone has said, each to their own blah blah blah i agree.

But, and i don't have a preference on religion, i like to class myself as open minded and think down the routes of davinci as it offers up an alternative to everything you hear in your up bringing.

But all these quotes people are posting up, 'saw a bullet turn a 90 degree angle in front of him and missed', these people must truly believe this, does this mean in a world of today, i could pretend to be completely religious, make up that 'i stuck my finger in a plug socket and got electricuted, but before the final blow i saw the switch flick off by itself', and people would believe me also?

If so isn't it worrying on what power people have, even if on a small community, and what beliefs and actions they could put into peoples minds for whatever reasons they seem fit?

i take the role of agnostic scientist....

if everything is energy (including, ultimately, matter - which is essentially built of particles of material built from energy) - where did the energy come from in the first place...

science - it's always been there. okay...how? never come across a theory that doesn't still leave the question - "yes, but how did that get there?"

religion - god made it. erm, how can you prove it? answer: "you can't - god is unknowable.."

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, for example... sounds impressive, right? But have you ever seen what happens if you put something in acid? It dissolves! If we had all this acid in our cells, we'd all dissolve! So much for the Theory of Evolution, Check MATE!
numpty - basic scientific study will show that the majority of conditions in the body are acidic due, for example, to the incidence of carbon dioxide, an acidic gas, or digestive fluids, in our body. check the pH of spit, or stomach contents, or blood

Reilgion is fine, but what difference is there between them? If there are so many different versions, and people believe that other people's religions are "made up", doesn't that go to say every religion is just made up?
ever looked at each of the "major" religions? how many things do they have in common? more than any of them will care to admit. organised religion evolves, all be it very slowly (in our lifetime, or several generations, but not on the grand scale of time) - it borrows things from past religions and contemporary religions and presents them as their own. look at the way that "modern" christianity has evolved from the monotheism of the ancients. there were other monotheist religions before christianity - it just became the "in" religion. Rome took up the mantle of christianity, imposed religious festivals that just "happened" to be on about the same date as similar festivals thus converting the plebian masses without them really being too bothered - most romans were a pretty pragmatic bunch more interested with their day-to-day survival and avoiding the eye of the procurators and guard than appeasing the "old gods".....

so essentially religions are made up - but where do these ideas come from and why? is it just some nutter who appears one day and says "I am the son of god, follow me" and everyone says "Hell, yeah, that's a great idea!" or is there more to it?

as far as christianity goes, we will never know truly. the earliest "bible" which really just means book, was a collection of essays on what was beleived to be the creation of the earth, as far as the understanding of humans could derive at that point in time, plus what equates to a "how did i get here?" family and local history, and meanderings along the way. the version we know now incorporated the "new testament" a collection of writing of the followers of the new religion of christianity.

however when Rome took up the cause of christianity, they decided to use it as a means of population control. how good would it be if not just the emperor but some far superior being had your entire afterlife in the palm of your hand and you had to follow a certain set of rules to save yourself?
who wrote the rules? well, who wrote the book? or rather who edited the book.....when the bible was collated it took vast a swathe of writings and brought together some of them - the ones that caried the most convenieant message.....as few of the population could read, the priests could control what message was sent out, and when.....and who controlled the priests? the emperor. what a great system.

king james did the same when he "translated" the bible for the people.....comparing some of the latin or greek texts shows some vast differences in the meanings of the phraseology. again, change for control.

and a method that was still used by catholisism for years.....it being only very recently that mass was allowed to be held in english. although many more people could read - how many people could speak or read in latin ?

How people can base their entire belief system around a book that was written, or rather collated, so many centuries after the events are supposed to happen, I will never know.

Proof that god doesn't exist = the creation of airsoft and the SP Ion :D No god would allow that!

God. Proposterous in my opinion. Created the world in seven days. Made the first man from clay. Send floods to wipe out humanity. Sent his son to die for our sins. Whilst these make for good Mel Gibson movies, there is no scientific fact. Not that I really care about a scientific POV, it's just that all scientific fact goes to disprove most of the Bible. Evolution vs Creationism for example, we all know which is correct.

But as I said, I don't believe in God, but if you do, and it makes you a better person then that's good. People get a lot out of things that aren't "for me". Like paintball for instance... :rolleyes:

Out of the major religions, I think the Buddhists have got it right. No gods, just the Bill and Ted "Be excellent to each other" approach. Save for the reincarnation bit.
I don't believe in God (I used to be pretty strong at one point) but I do subscribe to "the Bill and Ted "Be excellent to each other" approach." :)

Whenever I go to church I seem to end up thinking about how little I believe in God, but, when someone I know died last month and I went to their funeral it was really really comforting to thinking that maybe what she believed was true (she was a Catholic, lovely woman). Kinda like this ;)

However as a dad I've lost count of the times I've spoken to teh big man upstairs and asked him to watch over my daughter. :)

So I refuse to accpet the concept, yet wish for divine guidance, hmmm weird maybe just a tad hypocritical. :eek:

But one think I will say for definate, Sunday mornings are for sleeping or balling not for kneeling on teh floor of some god awful drafty church.
'bad' things like alcohol and sex and drugs are only 'bad' because society says so, (or to put it poshly, they're a societal construct), I hated feeling bad about myself before for doing pretty much nothing, and I was pretty judgemental of people myself...now I don't have any of that and I don't judge, or feel bad about myself, I listen to happy ska and go to anti bnp meetings, my life is pretty ace as it is.
& I believe when I die, there's no heaven or hell, you just cease to sense, like before you were born- there's no 'after'. Unromantic as it is I don't believe in the soul, 'all' we are as people are interactions, little electrical sparks between cells in your head.

Just recently my son Bobby came out to me. I had been worried for awhile. His teachers said most of his grades were slipping and he seemed depressed and withdrawn.

Bobby said he'd been hiding it for awhile because he was afraid I would reject him. I sat him down and told him that I loved him and that God loved him, but that his salvation was in danger if he did not resist his unnatural tempations. I told him how being gay would mean he would live a shorter life, and that if he couldnt change his orientation he could be celibate like most the ex-gays are. He started crying saying something along the lines of "I knew you wouldnt understand! You're just like everyone else!" before running to his room and slamming the door.

What did I do wrong? I dont want to lose my son, but I fear I already have. I talked it over with his therapist, who had the ludicrous idea that homosexuality was unchangable and that trying to repress could lead to lots of psychological damage (I've dropped him and will try to be finding another therapist with more moral beliefs). I wouldnt be surprised if he's the one who's feeding my son all the homosexual propaganda about how its 'ok' to be gay. That, or how homosexuality has engulfed the media, making it seem 'cool' and 'hip' and how they were just another oppressed minority. You didnt have to worry about seeing two men making out on tv at my age! I dont want to sound like a fanatic, but Im worried what other effects will come out of this increasingly secular, immoral society obsessed with filth.

Am I too late? Or is it possible to save my son
I had a discussion with someone a while ago and he said some pretty horrible things like, he would rather his son kill himself than tell him he was gay. Religion is not always a good thing and it can cause more pain than it heals.
'where is the love'? :)
