I am a Gas engineer and that problem with the potterton boilers have been known about for ages but they denied it completely.Everyone who works in the gas servicing/installation buisness knows about the pcb problems where they won't light the boiler on a morning and then just lockout.I have been to loads where potterton and British gas will blame everything and anything other than admit to the thing been sh*t.

Watch dog finally made potterton own up and admit it was a design problem .I don't know how you stand legally Skeet but its a well known problem in the industry with that boiler.
Did they actually ADMIT it?

I know it's a well known problem...spent many hours trawling the web...Suprima gets almost as many hits as Osama!!:D

I am fairly sure they said they would change pcb's for free on affected boilers.

google has entire forums dedicated to these piles of sh*t

The Suprima PCB problem is well known within the heating industry - it is most merchants top selling PCB. Gas valves have also been a significant problem on these boilers. AFAIK the larger Suprima models also require a fan upgrade along with the board. Rumour has it Potterton (just one of Baxi's trading names) were making many redundancies during the development of the Suprima and this may have contributed to the significant failure rates.

You may also like to know that another one of Pottertons appaling boilers is the now obsolete Puma/Combi80 series combination boilers. Apart from several design flaws on this particular range the boards also stand out from other manufacturers. It is not uncommon to find these boards burnt beyond recognition in the top left hand corner.

If you find estates with this boiler model you will again find most householders have had one if not two board swaps.

The jury's still out on the new Suprima boards. AFAIK there have been several versions.

Don't for one moment assume these failures are just due to Pottertons bad luck - these boards are purpously designed to fail. The cost implication to improve reliability would be minimal. All manufacturers to some extent design their boards with a particular service life - Baxi Group just push the boundaries of non-ethical business a little further. When you manufacture 750,000 boilers a year shareholders and profits come before customer service. It is not unknown for boards to fail after just 18 months.

Well...any Heating Engineers out there? Suprima 50...

Potterton make a Suprima series Boiler.

It has a common, recurring fault, whereby, the PCB needs to be replaced, at a cost of £180 for the board, plus whatever the plumber wants to add ontop, plus his fee..so...£300 plus.

But they don't last, some people have had to have one a year.

Experts have checked the boards out (various designs to try an improve them) and it's just down to poor design and manufacture.

Watchdog have checked it out and they all agree.

I have had to replace my PCB, got it done professionally and cheap...and I want the money back.

Potterton have made a goodwill gesture, in the form of 12 months cover for my boiler...but, elsewhere in the letter, they state that, they couldn't reimburse me, as I had not provided an invoice, with the plumbers CORGI registration number, if I were to provide them with details to support it, they would reconsider So I did...and someone else has written back telling me to fcuk myself, or words to that effect.

But, she only stated that the Goodwill, could not be negotiated...whereas, I have provided the information, that they give as the only reason they couldn't reimburse me

So...I want blood...smeared on money...
I have the same boiler and so do most of the peops on the estate. Installed by Persimmon. Most of them have changed their circuit boards but being tech minded I took mine out & repaired it. Done a few on the estate now!!!

I assume the problem you got was the boiler going into shut down with a flashing LED?

If you still have the old board I can take a look at it for you if you like. The repair on mine took about ten minutes and that was taking the board out too!! You are right it is a comon problem with Potterton.

I think they are covered for three years from date of install but the installer must validate the card.

Cheers for that Spike.

I actually removed my old board as well, and re-soldered all the dry joints on it, as I heard that Sh!terton, used lead free solder, which along with the fact that they provided little in the way of protection from the heat, causes the joints to fail.

It worked afterwards and I thought I had cracked it, but the board was pretty burnt out generally.

I have the latest board now, and I only had to pay cost for it, and it was fitted by the director of the company I got it from, so...fairly cheap.

Speaking of fairly cheap, next time you speak to the man in Westerham, the skinny one...could you mention to him, that I asked him to ask you about something??

Cryptic I know...:D
