The RP brands are great, but they can be pricey. 32 Degrees (National's line) is good but they've been really inconsistent lately. Draxxus is also pretty good at the top end, but their lower end stuff (Midnight) is horrid. TC is pretty inexpensive and has been decent, as long as it's fresh.
Most stuff you buy from a field or store should be pretty fresh and work OK. I'd stay away from anything you can get at Walmart or the big sporting good stores. That stuff is usually overpriced and has been sitting around for a while.
