Yeah it says you do have to, but then it also says on your marker that its not a toy!
jesus its my favourite toy :)

It is to cover there asses.

But you are more likely to damage your mask taking the lenses out after everygame - cause lets face it they arent to easy to remove

A thing to remember is most lenses are thermal anyway therefore the inside lens doesn't take any hits at all. So even if the outer lens does crack open the inner lens should protect your eyes. (I've seen this happen with site goggles.)

I have in my (omg I just realise how long!) 11 or so years of infrequent paintball seen 2 lenses crack from impacts. One was a recball sites single lense and it wasnt even a close shot. Those gogs take punishment week in week out, but the velocity of punter markers on sites are usually lower than 270fps in my experience. Of course site lenses I know rarely get changed.

The other was a thermal lense which was less than a few months old, at a tourny, and lets just say the flimsy inner layer did help, but he still got shell and paint in his eye. We are unsure if the gun that shot him was hot, instinct says very...but either way, his lense didnt hack it and a new one might of.

Yup, and with all the different paint formulations out there, weakening is a distinct possibility.
Always check your goggles, at s****horpe last year i cam close to injury because of the heat. The rubber seal on my proteus got very soft and slipped over the retaining clips, didn't realise until I was cleaning them and found a big chunk of shell inside the goggles. Always check 'em.
