As already stated, if you leave your barrel sock at the start gate, then if the marshalls call game over for an injury or similar then you cant sock your gun as its not where your going to be, and a squeegee does not count.

In the Rules it states that "players that separate themselves from any piece of equipment brought onto the field by more than 2 meters, except squeegies or pods, will be immediately eliminated".
I don't know where they got the 3 eliminations from but "rules are subject to change without prior notice"
