Firstly, I want to point out that I don't think the Freak is a "bad" barrel and definitely serves it's purpose of giving you the felxibility with paint.
However, I would say that there are a few things I was not happy with it, namely the fragility of the inserts and the quality of machining.
In a lot of freaks I have seen, when you screw the front and back in and look from the front you can see the stepping from back to front isn't even all the way round, i.e. they don't line up properly.
I bought a JT off nickp and I have to say it's perfect. most of Thunder have Freaks and most only use them when the paint doesn't match their "normal" barrels like boomies etc. I don't quite know why but most of us just don't feel its as good, probably just perception as a lot of people think it's great.
My opinion:
I think the Freak is like having 8 barrels that perform at 80% not 1 barrel at 100%, great idea and good to have in your kit bag but if you want the absolute best performance then I think having a few "proper" barrels is a better choice.
Personally I am looking for a full set of DYE ultralites.
.... and as Robbo keeps telling me, what's the point of a barrel set that has inserts at +/- .002 when paint is +/- 0.025. Dudes got a point.
